Publisher/Editor of SunFlash and FlashBack EMAIL: flash@flashback.com or flash@sun.com This article will tell you about the recent changes to the distribution aliases for SunFlash and FlashBack. It will also tell you how to get dropped from or added to from these lists. Note that the sunflash-f and flashback-f lists are now active. New Struture ------------ I have been restructuring the 'Florida SunFlash', 'Sun FlashBack' and 'Internet Sun FlashBack' mailing lists. The top level lists are now located on FlashBack.com and are managed by majordomo - a well known mailing list manager. People have been asking what are the differences between the lists and why the changes. Here's a quick summary: old SunFlash = SunFlash + Sun FlashBack + Sun Internet FlashBack Why the changes ? o some people don't want the non-Sun announcements - they just want to hear about Sun from Sun. o some people want only the non-Sun announcements. (e.g. Sun employees who get all the Sun material already.) o I was spending too much time performing list management, so I needed to use an automatic list manager. The New Lists ------------- SunFlash Articles that originate from within Sun. Includes press releases, Sun newsletters, edited SunIntros Sun FlashBack Articles of interest to Sun users from companies other than Sun. Used to be 'Third Party Announcements' Sun Internet FlashBack Articles of interest to Sun from the Internet. E.g. Frequently Asked Questions, EFF newsletters Subscription Options -------------------- Each of the two main lists, (SunFlash and FlashBack) have several variations: Daily Articles are posted every day. Sometimes several per day. Some articles are digests and the full-text of the articles can be requested from flashback@flashback.com. A monthly digest is also posted. Weekly One digest is posted each week. The full-text of the articles can be requested from flashback@flashback.com Monthly One digest is posted each month. The full-text of the articles can be requested from flashback@flashback.com The Monthly digest is also sent to the Daily and Full subscribers. Full All articles are posted as they become available. MT-weekly Same as the Weekly except that all the articles are included as mailtool style attachements. (eventually I'll use mime style attachements) The message posted to this list can be very large. 300k to 1M. The 10 lists are: ---------------- sunflash Daily SunFlash sunflash-w Weekly SunFlash sunflash-m Monthly SunFlash sunflash-f Full SunFlash mt-sunflash-w MailTool Weekly SunFlash flashback Daily FlashBack flashback-w Weekly FlashBack flashback-m Monthly FlashBack flashback-f Full FlashBack mt-flashback-w MailTool Weekly FlashBack Which lists are you in ---------------------- Note that SunFlash and FlashBack lists are starting identically. Thus your email address, sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com, is included in both the mailing lists sunflash and flashback How To Change ------------- If you want to be dropped, send email to Majordomo@FlashBack.com with a message body unsubscribe sunflash sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com unsubscribe flashback sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com If you want to make a change, unsubscribe and then subscribe: unsubscribe sunflash sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com subscribe If sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com is not the prefered form for your email address please change your entry in both lists when you send email to Majordomo@FlashBack.com: unsubscribe sunflash sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com unsubscribe flashback sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com subscribe sunflash subscribe flashback If sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com is a local alias, then the unsubscribe command applies to everyone in that alias. If you really want to be dropped from a local alias, try sending email to owner-sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com or the postmaster for that machine. If there are multiple sunflash/flashback subscribers at your site, you may want to create local aliases so that only one message is sent to your site. I suggest that you use the same names for your local aliases as I do and please create a local owner-alias. Example: foo.com has 1 person - joe-bob@foo.com - subscribed to flashback and sunflash. Joe Bob creates (in /etc/aliases on foo.com) the aliases : flashback: joe-bob@foo.com, peter@foo.com, paul@foo.com, mary@foo.com sunflash: joe-bob@foo.com, peter@foo.com, paul@foo.com, mary@foo.com owner-flashback: joe-bob@foo.com owner-sunflash: joe-bob@foo.com and sends one message to majordomo@flashback.com with four commands: unsubscribe flashback joe-bob@foo.com unsubscribe sunflash joe-bob@foo.com subscribe flashback flashback@foo.com subscribe sunflash sunflash@foo.com Joe-Bob can now add/delete/change local users without contacting majordomo@flashback.com. (In fact, Joe-Bob could install majordomo on foo.com to manage all the foo.com aliases ....) I hope that you find SunFlash and FlashBack to be of value! -johnj
