Both systems use an innovative multiprocessor design that enables users to increase performance simply by plugging in more processor modules, allowing growth with investment protection. SPARCserver 1000E The SPARCserver 1000E is the enhanced version of the award-winning SPARCserver 1000. This server was selected as product of the year by Open Computing and Advanced Systems magazines, gaining an installed base of more than 6,000 in slightly over a year. Application performance, modular design, exceptional expandability and packaging of the new SPARcserver 1000E are unmatched by any departmental server in the industry. Using up to eight 60 MHz SuperSPARC(TM) processors in one system, it can provide nearly linear scalability for many applications. SPARCcenter 2000E The SPARCcenter 2000E server is the follow-on to the industry's most powerful, affordable and expandable enterprise UNIX server, the SPARCcenter 2000. According to International Data Corporation, the SPARCcenter 2000 is the best-selling UNIX system in its class, with more than 1,000 units shipped worldwide in 1993. The SPARCcenter 2000E delivers reliability, availability and serviceability for mission-critical applications, with features such as ECC and parity-protected system buses to protect data; an automatic recovery system feature that enables the system to automatically reconfigure around hardware failures; and a modular design that gives easy access to all components. Like the SPARCcenter 2000, the SPARCcenter 2000E server continues to set industry performance records. This mainframe-caliber server for data center applications leads the industry in NFS(R) file server performance, delivering 4,385 operations per second at 40.8 milliseconds average response time (SPEC SFS 097.LADDIS benchmark for a single system). "These latest enhancements to our server line demonstrate our commitment to protecting our customer's investments with smooth, cost-effective performance growth paths," said Jay Puri, vice president of product marketing at SMCC. Pricing and Availability The SPARCserver 1000E is available in configurations from two to eight processors. The entry-level configuration, which includes two 60 MHz processors, 64 megabytes of main memory and 2 gigabytes of disk, is priced at $54,300 (U.S. list). An eight-processor system with 256 megabytes of main memory and 4 gigabytes of disk is priced at $176,350. The base configuration of the SPARCcenter 2000E, with two 60 MHz CPUs, 64 megabytes of main memory and 5.8 gigabytes of disk storage, is priced at $124,795. A fully configured server with 20 processors, 640 megabytes of main memory and 5.8 gigabytes of disk storage has a list price of $659,395. All systems are available in November, 1994. SMCC continues to offer attractive upgrade options for current owners of Sun(R) systems. For example, customers can upgrade from a SPARCserver 1000 to a SPARCserver 1000E for $25,445 with a simple board swap.
