Top Floor: Food Court and The Garage. Sponsors of the Internet Mall: Internet Distribution Services (contact marcf@netcom.com) Netcom Communications Services (contact info@netcom.com) As we move into the autumn, the construction boom just continues to pick up momentum at the Internet Mall! This time, in two weeks, we're pleased to announce that we've grown almost 30% in size, with plenty more shops still laying carpet and adding phone lines (virtually, at least). This month we welcome an eclectic set of new shops - we've even added a new floor to the Mall, the sixth, for furniture. Some of the fun new cybershops: Oxbridge Communications, Muscovy Imports, Eurolens, Springs of Life, Bonsai Boy, Orchids R Us, Career Directions, American Employment Weekly, San Francisco Reservations, WGBH Boston, Harvest Burger and the ever-hot Chili Heads. A special welcome also to Condom Country! It helps users with questions by providing instant access to their answers; it helps other readers of the newsgroup, who will have to read fewer of the questions they see over and over again; it helps everyone by (hopefully) reducing bandwidth utilization. For one thing, the Net is growing so rapidly that any book that tried to list all its resources would be outdated the day it was published. But more important, such a guide would be so long that a beginner could easily get lost in it trying to learn such fundamental things as how to log on. That's where the Big Dummy Update comes in. Every month, it will look at topics not covered well, if at all, in the original guide -- topics that, as you become more comfortable as a net.surfer, you'll want to know more about. And because the Internet continues to grow exponentionally, the Update will also carry news of interesting new Net resources and tools. 1. If it wasn't one thing, it was another. You'll note the new name. IDG Books, which has a whole series of "Dummies" guides ("DOS for Dummies," etc.), got increasingly upset with our use of the word "Dummy." Since they were first, our name had to go, which caused a delay in getting this out (not to mention the printed version of the guide itself, appearing soon on a bookstore shelf near you), since we had to come up with a new name. Then there was the root canal gone bad and, well, you don't want to hear about it. In any case, what all this means is that from now on, this Update is officially Everybody's Internet Update. The original guide itself will be called Everybody's Guide to the Internet in the printed version and EFF's Guide to the Internet in the online version. See the Contact Info section below for how to obtain the latest copy of the online guide and back issues of the Updates. As always, comments and suggestions are most welcome! You'll find my e- mail address in the Contact Info section (fortunately, *that* hasn't changed). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5006 - EVERYBODY'S INTERNET Update Number 4 - July, 1994 From: Adam Gaffin adamg@world.std.com 1. You can help make it an even better-quality FAQ by writing a short contribution or update and sending it BY EMAIL ONLY to me. Thanks! The latest Solaris 2 FAQ, including an HTML version, and some other goodies can be obtained through ftp from ftp.fwi.uva.nl:/pub/solaris. The HTML (URL: ftp://ftp.fwi.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2.html) version of the FAQ contains references to most FTP sites and files mentioned in the FAQ. The references to ftp sites are always to either HTML files or directories, never to binary files. I've added an index of questions and marked changed(*) and added questions(+). The FAQ is being reorganised, time permitting. The index is generated automatically, so there may be errors there. Not all questions are in the section they belong in. Suggestions on how best to subdivide/order the FAQ are welcome. 1. GENERAL 2. MORE INFO 3. SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION 4. NETWORKING 5. TROUBLE SHOOTING 6. SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT 7.
