SUNSELECT INTRODUCES PC-NFS 5.1 New Version of Popular Networking Software Simplifies Installation, Configuration, Internet Access CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- May 3, 1994 -- SunSelect, the PC-to-enterprise integration business of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today introduced PC-NFS(R) 5.1, offering new features and enhancements that make the package easier to install and use. PC-NFS is the most widely implemented TCP/IP solution for PCs, with 27 percent of that market and more than a million nodes installed. PC-NFS enables PC users to access applications and data residing on UNIX systems, VMS minicomputers and IBM mainframes using TCP/IP, the de facto standard for enterprise-wide connectivity. PC users can work in their familiar MS-DOS(R) and Microsoft Windows environments while easily accessing distributed applications. New features in PC-NFS 5.1 include a streamlined and simplified installation program that integrates three steps into a single procedure. This eliminates the need to run separate installation programs for Microsoft Windows environments and makes installation much easier. As a result, the average installation time for the new version of PC-NFS has been cut in half. Configuration time has also been reduced. PC-NFS 5.1 takes advantage of the emerging Internet standard, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), for automatic client configuration. DHCP enables client configuration parameters to be moved from DHCP or BOOTP servers to individual PCs. Through DHCP, the server automatically manages IP addresses, freeing network administrators from this time-consuming task. This capability is especially useful for portable computers needing temporary access to the network. PC-NFS now supports the Domain Name Service (DNS) in addition to Network Information Service (NIS), thereby allowing PC-NFS to be integrated into both DNS and NIS environments. With PC-NFS 5.1, users can access the Internet from individual PCs. Included are instructions on finding an Internet Service provider and downloading free software, as well as a complete list of introductory books and on-line guides. The new release also provides DynaText(TM) on-line, "Electronic Book" documentation via CD-ROM with fast search capabilities. CD-ROM documentation gives users immediate access to documentation and is especially useful at large sites that typically have only a few hard copy manuals. PC-NFS 5.1 supports a new user interface for its Microsoft Windows Telnet program. The interface features a toolbar with push-button icons to make it easy for users to utilize the most commonly required Telnet functions, including file transfer and printing. PC-NFS 5.1 offers more flexible printer support. In the past, PC users could access only those printers that were NFS-mounted on the server. Users can now print to unmounted network printers using the standard BSD UNIX LPR protocol. Such printers can be attached directly to the network, to another LPD server, or to a PC-NFS node. Pricing and availability PC-NFS 5.1 will be available in May 1994. New licenses begin at $325 per user and decrease with volume. Upgrades for existing customers begin at $99 per user and decrease with volume. Base packs, including media and documentation, are priced at $79 for on-line documentation and $89 for hard copy documentation.
