The SPARCstation 10TurboGX system is also 100% binary compatible with the SPARCstation 10GX system. All applications that currently run on the SPARCstation 10GX will also run on the SPARCstation 10TurboGX system. SPARCstation 10TurboGX systems replace SPARCstation 10GX systems as Sun's standard SPARCstation 10 system. With higher graphics performance at the same price as the SPARCstation 10GX system, the SPARCstation 10TurboGX system offers better price/performance. The SPARCstation 10TurboGX system is idea for commercial, CASE, financial services, GIS, ECAD and low-end MCAD applications. The new TurboGX graphics frame buffer is also available as an x-option for customers interested in multiple-headed systems, as a graphics card upgrade for customers who currently have GX or CG3 graphics frame buffers, and in chassis upgrades to a SPARCstation 10TurboGX system. All chassis upgrades to SPARCstation 10 that previously included a GX frame buffer will now include a TGX frame buffer. TurboGX FEATURES AND BENEFITS ----------------------------- o Accelerated 2-D/3-D graphics offers fast wireframe rendering o Accelerated copy, text and scrolling offers fast windowing performance o 8-bit color/grayscale frame buffer supports 256 colors o Single wide SBus cards leaves three slots available for other SBus cards in SPARCstation 10TurboGX systems o Supports 1024 x 768 and 1152 x 900 monitor resolutions for compatibility with existing Sun(R) monitors o 100% binary compatibility with GX graphics means all existing software applications for GX will run on TurboGX without recompiling o Solaris(R) 1.x and 2.x compatibility offers support for over 8,400 applications PRODUCT TRANSITION SCHEDULE --------------------------- All SPARCstation 10GX systems, x-options and upgrades are being removed from the price list. The schedule is as follows Last date to order May 6, 1994 Last date to take delivery June 3, 1994 With this announcement, the following systems will be removed from the price list: o S10EGX-40-32-P44 o S10MX-40-32-P44 o S10MX-40-32-P46 o S10FGX-40-32-P44 o S10FGX-40-32-P46 o S10GX-40-32-P44 o S10GX-40-32-P46 o S10MX-51-32-P46 o S10FGX-51-32-P46 o S10GX-51-32-P46 o S10MX-402-32-P46 o S10FGX-402-32-P46 o S10GX-402-32-P46 o S10MX-512-64-P46 o S10GX-512-64-P46 o S10GX-514-64-P46 The following upgrade will be removed from the price list: o UG-GXFB The following GX x-options will be removed from the price list: o (X)355A o X356A o X357A Note: Competitive upgrades to SPARCstation 10TurboGX will be offered to SPARCstation 10 Model 40 with 16" color and 20" color monitors, and to SPARCstation 10 Model 51 with a 20" color monitor. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. What is the difference between the GX and TurboGX frame buffers? A. The TurboGX frame buffer is an improved version of the GX frame buffer. The GX ASIC was redesigned to offer up to 50% higher 2-D vector performance. This was accomplish by removing the bottlenecks within the GX ASIC, speeding up the chip from 23 MHz to 30 MHz and using 80 ns VRAM instead of 100 ns VRAM. The table below shows the differences between GX, TurboGX and TurboGXplus frame buffers. ---------------------------------------------------------- | Feature | GX | TurboGX | TurboGXplus | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 2-D vectors/sec | 400,000 | 762,000 | 1,500,000 | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 3-D vectors/sec | 357,000 | 405,000 | 499,000 | |----------------------------------------------------------| | Monitor support | 1152x900 | 1152x900 | 1152x900 | | | | 1024x768 | 1280x1024 | | | | | 1024x768 | |----------------------------------------------------------| | on-board memory | 1 MB | 1 MB | 4 MB | |----------------------------------------------------------| | Memory speed | 100 ns | 80 ns | 60 ns | |----------------------------------------------------------| | Speed | 23 Mhz | 30 Mhz | 46 Mhz | |----------------------------------------------------------| | Double Buffering | no | no | yes | ---------------------------------------------------------- Q. Is the TurboGX REALLY 100% compatible with GX? A. Yes, it is. Any application running on a GX will also run on a TurboGX without any modification. The TurboGX is 100% binary compatible with the GX. Also, the TurboGX will work with both Solaris 1.x and 2.x applications. However, customers will see the highest performance running the TurboGX with Solaris 2.3. Q. Wasn't the TurboGX already announced? A. No, the TurboGXplus was announced in July 1993. The TurboGXplus is a follow-on product to the GXplus and offers 2x the graphics performance of GX/GXplus, double buffering and support for high resolution monitors. The TurboGX offers 1.5x the graphics performance of the GX/GXplus, single buffering and support for 1024x768 and 1152x900 monitors. Q. How can I upgrade my current system with a GX frame buffer to one with a TurboGX frame buffer? A. A number of upgrade paths exist, depending upon what system you currently have. These upgrades include system upgrades (e.g. SPARCstaion 2/GX to SPARCstation 10/TurboGX) and board upgrades (e.g. GX to TurboGX). Q. Which chassis upgrades will contain a TurboGX frame buffer? A. All chassis upgrades from IPX to SPARCstation10 will contain a TurboGX frame buffer, as these are the only chassis upgrades that currently include a GX frame buffer. Chassis upgrades from SPARCstations 1/1+/2 to SPARCstation 10 allow customers to migrate their graphics, and do not include a TurboGX frame buffer. Should they want to, customers could then upgrade their GX or color frame buffer to TurboGX via UG-GX-TX1 or UG-C-TX1, respectively. Q. What happens to the part numbers of the SPARCstation IPX to SPARCstation 10 TurboGX chassis upgrades? A. Nothing. The following part numbers for IPX to SPARCstation 10 TGX chassis upgrades remain the same: UG-IPX-S10-51-32 UGIPX-S10-51-32P46 UG-IPX-S10-40 UG-IPX-S10-40-P46 Q. Which competitive upgrades will contain a TurboGX frame buffer? A. Competitive upgrades to SPARCstation 10 TurboGX will be offered in three variations: CUS10FTX1-40-P46 is a SPARCstation 10 Model 40 TurboGX with 17" color, 32 MB, 1.05-GB disk CUS10TX1-40-P46 is a SPARCstation 10 Model 40 TurboGX with 20" color, 32 MB, 1.05 GB-disk CUS10TX1-51-32P46 is a SPARCstation 10 Model 51 TurboGX with 20" color, 32 MB, 1.05-GB disk GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE -------------------- Here is a comparison of GX, TurboGX and TurboGXplus graphics performance.
