New Locking Module for stacking two SPARCserver 1000s or two Disk Tower 1000s or a combination of the two. Rack Mount Kit for mounting SPARCserver 1000 or Disk Tower 1000 in an Expansion Rack. (183 lines) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announces the availability of three new products designed to allow customers to stack or rack mount SPARCserver(TM) 1000 and Disk Tower 1000 enclosures: a Stacker Unit, a Locking Module, and a Rack Mount Kit. In addition, the Expansion Rack (955A) and the Tower Stand (X962A) are being repriced from a Category B products to Category A products, effective January 18, 1994. The Stacker Unit ---------------- The Stacker Unit consists of a mobile, base platform with a power supply, locking casters, and a tower with cable guides to be used for cable management. It includes all of the hardware necessary to stack up to four SPARCserver 1000s or four Disk Tower 1000s or any combination of the two. The power distribution unit provides six configureable outlets (only 5 maximum are to be used at any one time). It enables the power to all or some of the devices in the Stacker Unit to be controlled by the on/off switch of a master device, typically a SPARCserver 1000. The distribution unit operates on 220-240V. Locking Module -------------- The Locking Module is used to lock together two SPARCserver 1000 or Disk Tower 1000 enclosures for purposes of stability. This is the same lock module found in the stacker kit. When more than two enclosures are to be stacked, the Stacker Unit product should be used. Rack Mount Kit -------------- The Rack Mount Kit allows customers to mount a SPARCserver 1000 or a Disk Tower 1000 in an Expansion Rack (955A). The kit includes a shelf, brackets, and other necessary hardware to mount one SPARCserver 1000 or one Disk Tower 1000. AVAILABILITY ------------ All three new products are bookable immediately and will begin shipping in March 1994. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Can you stack fewer/greater than 4 SPARCserver 1000s or Disk Tower 1000s with the new Stacker Unit? A. You may stack fewer than 4 SPARCserver 1000s or Disk Tower 1000s. The cable management system of the Stacker Unit has a cover on the left and the right which is as tall as 4 SPARCserver 1000s. A stack of 2 or 3 systems will work fine; the cable management system covers will extend to the height of 4 systems. A stack of 4 systems/disk towers is the maximum supported. Q. Why are there 6 outlets on the power distribution unit, if only 4 enclosures can be stacked? A. The various power control configurations required a total of 6 outlets. Only 4 are usable at any one time, except when a SPARCserver 10 is used as a host to control a stack of four Disk Tower 1000s. The maximum current supplied by the combined outlets is 24A. Q. How can the SPARCserver 10 be stacked with four Disk Tower 1000s? Do the lock modules also lock the SPARCserver 10 to the stack? A. No. The SPARCserver 10 can only rest on the stack, without locking on to it, or sit on a separate surface, such as a table. The stack should never be moved with a SPARCserver 10 on it, since it could slide off. Q. Will you need to remove the cable covers every time you want to configure/ reconfigure the cables? A. No. the covers are open to the rear of the stack, so that cables can be reconfigured while the covers are in place. Q. Do you need to buy Locking Modules for use with the Stacker Unit? A. No. The Stacker Unit comes with three Locking Modules. Q. Can you purchase four Locking Modules to create a stack, instead of purchasing the entire Stacker Kit? A. No. The Locking Modules are intended for the stacking of no more than 2 systems/disk towers when the customer does not want to support them on the mobile stacking base, which is designed to distribute the load on the bottom most enclosure. Q. Is there a separate SunService price for the Stacker Unit, Locking Module, or the Rack Mount Kit? A. No. Service for these products is included in the SunSpectrum service offerings for the SPARCserver 1000 and the Disk Tower 1000. Q. Do you plug in the rack mounted SPARCserver 1000 or Disk Tower 1000 to the power supply of the Expansion Rack? A. Yes. Q. What is the maximum number of SPARCserver 1000s or Disk Tower 1000s which can be mounted in an Expansion Rack? A. Assuming no disk trays or tape drives, customers can mount up to 4 of the SPARCserver 1000s or Disk Tower 1000s.
