The award was based on the results of the magazine's second annual Readers' Choice survey of hardware and software products for the process control industry. The Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) workstation won top honors by a wide margin, garnering 33 percent of the vote. It outdistanced Hewlett-Packard and IBM, which tied for second place with 13 percent of the vote each. The award comes at a time when SMCC is rapidly gaining marketshare in the process manufacturing industries: $230 million was generated from process manufacturing customers in fiscal 1993. "We expect this quarter of a billion dollar figure to double by fiscal 1995," said Curt Wozniak, vice president of marketing, SMCC. "Clearly we have struck a chord with decision makers in this industry who are looking to Sun for leadership in networking, the flexibility of open systems, and partnerships with other technology companies to provide real solutions for today's manufacturing problems." SMCC has partnered with leading OEMs, application vendors and system integrators to provide solutions that span the manufacturing enterprise, from factory floor to the data center. Offering excellent price/performance, connectivity and scalability, SMCC's systems support a wide range of manufacturing needs, including process control, manufacturing resource planning/enterprise resource planning, computer-aided design, engineering and manufacturing, and real-time applications. SMCC makes its technology openly available, allowing customers to purchase or license the design of SMCC's SPARC(R) microprocessors, ASICS or board-level systems. This is especially beneficial to OEMs, such as distributed control system vendors, who want to speed their time to market while offering their customers proven technology. CONTROL is the only magazine that covers the entire process control industry, including pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, utilities, chemicals and food and beverage. The Readers' Choice survey reflects the opinions of a wide cross-section of end users, executives and system integrators who rely on products such as Sun(TM) workstations to give them a competitive edge in process manufacturing.
