SUNSOFT UNVEILS SOLARIS DEVELOPER KITS UNIX EXPO, New York -- Sept. 21, 1993 -- SunSoft, Inc. today unveiled a Software Developer Kit (SDK) and Driver Developer Kit (DDK) for the Solaris environment, enabling commercial and in-house developers to quickly and efficiently build products that exploit the power of the Solaris distributed computing solution. The kits offer a number of features including development tools, sample code, on-line documentation, and training and support materials, designed to accelerate the development process. In addition, the company announced a series of new developer programs to educate and train customers on the Solaris technology. SunSoft recently shipped its millionth unit of the Solaris software, making Solaris the world's number one UNIX product. The software is deployed by some of the world's leading companies including Amoco Production Company, AT&T, Cathay Pacific, DuPont, Federal Express, JP Morgan, Munich Airport and the Swiss Bank. Already, more than 8,000 32-bit applications -- the largest base in the world -- are available for the Solaris environment. More than 1,300 applications are currently shipping for the Solaris 2 software including Cadre Technologies, CenterLine Software, Interactive Development Environment, Micro Focus, Progress Software and Uniface. "Solaris 2 offers the most powerful and robust software in the industry today," said Jim Billmaier, vice president of product marketing at SunSoft. "Our new developer kits and programs will continue to accelerate application and driver development for the Solaris software." SOLARIS SDK The Solaris Software Developer Kit for SPARC and x86 enables application developers to take full advantage of the power of the Solaris operating environment, including windowing, distributed network services, graphics and imaging, and application integration facilities. The Solaris SDK includes: Developer AnswerBook -- provides easy-to-access, on-line hypertext technical documentation including 20 manuals on technologies such as ToolTalk, STREAMS, threads programming, XView, etc. Motif 1.2.2 -- enables X-based applications to be built leveraging the widely supported Motif graphical user interface, and preparing for the Common Desktop Environment. OpenWindows Developer's Guide -- offers a point-and-click GUI builder to design, test and build graphical user interfaces quickly and efficiently. Sample Application Code -- provides an extensive array of sample source code demonstrating how to utilize numerous Solaris features including ONC+, ToolTalk, application integration and SunOS 5 facilities. Technical White Papers -- providing the latest technical information and tips on a broad range of topics including multithreading, Display PostScript and porting applications from non-Solaris 2 environments. The Solaris SDK for SPARC includes: Devguide Motif Utilities -- assists with easy migration of Devguide-generated OPEN LOOK applications to Motif C source code or Motif UIL source code. Graphics and Imaging Developer Toolkits -- provides XIL library tools for true color video decompression and full motion video development. XGL and PEX toolkits for 2-D and 3-D graphics, and 3-D graphics interface for high-performance applications. SOLARIS DDK The Solaris Driver Developer Kit for x86 and SPARC offers documentation, tools, and sample code to enable third-party developers to create, port, test and package high-performance drivers for the Solaris software environment. Solaris DDK guides the developer through the various stages of building a Solaris driver and provides tips on exploiting the advanced features of Solaris including multithreading, dynamically loadable drivers, and the layered I/O system. The Solaris DDK includes: Device Drivers Writer's Guide -- features comprehensive guide to the Solaris driver writing process. DDI/DKI Reference Manual -- provides the specification of the Solaris DDI/DKI interface, the standard interface between device drivers and the Solaris kernel. STREAMS Programmer's Guide -- discusses the kernel-level and user-level interfaces to the STREAMS I/O mechanism. Sample and Skeleton Device Drivers -- provides source code modules as a starting point for customers to reduce development time. Application Packaging and Installation Guide -- offers a standard way to package drivers so they can be easily installed on a customer's system. The Solaris DDK for SPARC includes: Solaris VISUAL Driver Developer's Documentation -- features documentation to port Solaris VISUAL components to graphic devices. OpenBoot PROM Command Reference Guide -- facilitates development of drivers to leverage the auto-configuration capabilities of SBus devices. The Solaris DDK for x86 includes: x86 Device Driver Manual -- provides detailed "how to" guide on developing x86 hardware-specific drivers. Skeleton Device Drivers -- provides device driver templates to simplify SCSI, token ring, PIO and DMA devices. SunSoft also offers Solaris DDK test suites to help developers run self-certification tests on products and integrate them into their quality assurance testing cycle. DEVELOPER PROGRAMS SunSoft offers a number of Catalyst developer programs to communicate timely technical information to more than 15,000 commercial and in-house developers throughout the year. Concurrent with UNIX Expo, the Solaris Technical Exchange Program (STEP), one of the many developer education conferences, was held in New York. The conference is also being held in Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco through October 4. This technical forum features topics including "Solaris As An Application Platform", "The Common Open Software Environment", and "Migrating Applications To Solaris 2". These seminars add to the range of other programs offered to Catalyst members. These include Solaris Associates Program, a developer program that provides migration and porting information; Master Solutions Program, a program that provides marketing opportunities with SunSoft channel partners; and Catalyst CDware, a program to promote Solaris software and hardware support products on CD-ROM. In addition, a special UNIX Expo issue of the quarterly technical newsletter, Catalyst Flash, and a number of developer books available through SunSoft Press, are showcased at the SunSoft booth (#400) here today. For more information on the Catalyst program, please call 510-460-3267.
