Sun and CDC have teamed with Lynx Real Time Systems, which will provide standards-compliant technology for high-performance real-time needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Companies team with Lynx to provide turnkey real-time solutions ARDEN HILLS, MN -- September 20, 1993 -- Control Data Systems, Inc. and Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announced today that Control Data has joined the Sun(R) Integration Alliance Program (SIAP) to provide open, integrated real-time solutions for the process control and test-and-measurement industries. The two companies also announced that they have teamed with Lynx Real Time Systems, which will provide standards-compliant technology for high-performance real-time needs. As a result, Control Data becomes the first systems integrator to provide solutions worldwide based on open, volume technologies for real-time applications. Previously, users had to buy proprietary real-time systems or build their own. Helping SMCC and Control Data to meet real-time demands is LynxOS(R), the POSIX-compliant, UNIX(R)-compatible operating system which offers fast, deterministic performance comparable to proprietary kernels. LynxOS can either be embedded in ROM or configured as a complete, self-hosted system. Control Data will market volume turnkey systems based on Sun SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) systems, and SPARC(R) microprocessor-based boards running LynxOS and Sun's Solaris(R) operating environment. This will provide users with both full real-time capabilities and access to over 7,800 hardware and software solutions on one platform. Control Data will also support SMCC OEMs that serve the process control and test-and-measurement markets, integrating applications into enterprise systems. Additionally, Control Data will work with the SMCC sales organization to provide integration services to end users. "Sun's open, scalable architecture and operating environment, coupled with Lynx's open standards-based operating system that provides fast, deterministic response, will enable us to deliver hard and soft real-time capabilities in solutions for process control and related environments," said Jim Goodland, director of Control Data's Real-Time Competency Center. "We can now integrate SPARC technology, LynxOS, numerous applications and I/O boards, to provide customers with a cost-effective, hard real-time solution." "Hard" real-time operating systems such as LynxOS provide quick and predictable response -- often within a few microseconds -- to changing events which would affect the system. Solaris provides "soft" real-time capabilities -- or nearly instantaneous response to such events. "LynxOS complements and extends the real-time capabilities of Solaris," said Dr. Inder Singh, president, Lynx Real-Time Systems. "LynxOS supports Sun's SPARC systems as a strategic platform and will continue this support as Sun and Control Data expand into new markets where predictable and deterministic response is a requirement." "By teaming together, we are providing our joint customers in manufacturing with a packaged solution that fully addresses real-time needs and can extend throughout the factory and the enterprise, from board-level systems all the way to desktop and mainframe-class computers," said Mario Dal Canto, director, technical and industrial market development, SMCC. Through SIAP, Control Data and SMCC will develop, market, and integrate client/server solutions for process control and test-and-measurement applications which place heavy real-time demands on systems. SIAP brings major systems integrators together with SMCC to target specific vertical markets or key technologies in various industries. Activities range from joint sales and marketing to developing and integrating client-server solutions for SPARC computers running the Solaris operating environment. Control Data Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CDAT) is a global systems integrator, applying the skills and experience of its computer professionals -- "Control Data Brainware(TM)" -- to the implementation of open systems solutions for the operational problems of customers worldwide. The company focuses its expertise on integrating computer solutions to business-specific problems, primarily in manufacturing design, network communication, and database management. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC), the world's leading supplier of open client-server computing solutions, is an operating company of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Sun is the exclusive computer supplier to World Cup Soccer 1994. SMCC has its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. develops and markets LynxOS -- the POSIX-compliant, UNIX compatible operating system designed for hard, real-time applications.
