These features include expanded multiprocessing support and additional security features. The company also announced that it has tripled the number of platforms and peripherals supported by the Solaris software, expanding its reach into the high-end x86 market. The new enhancements build on the features inherent within the Solaris software including symmetric multiprocessing, multithreading, built-in networking, security, system administration, interapplication software and user-friendly interface. SunSoft has already shipped over 15,000 units of the Solaris x86 software in less than three months. More than 500 third-party applications are scheduled to ship for Solaris x86 by year's end. Solaris x86 will also run the most popular Microsoft Windows applications including Microsoft Word for Windows, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint through SunSelect's Wabi technology. "The momentum for Solaris x86 continues in the channel, software developer community and the Global 1000," said JanPieter Scheerder, vice president of product engineering at SunSoft. "The new MP-ready Solaris -- the most powerful MP software for the enterprise -- will further extend our presence in the rightsizing marketplace." SunSoft is now shipping an Early Access Multiprocessing (MP) Platform Kit for Solaris x86 developed to support specific MP systems such as the Wyse System 7000i and the AST Manhattan. The MP Kit provides the necessary drivers and boot code for MP system vendors to fine tune their hardware to take full advantage of Solaris features. "As a provider of open systems-based symmetric multiprocessing systems, Wyse is pleased to be SunSoft's development partner in the multiprocessing version of Solaris x86," said Jack Kister, director of product marketing for Wyse's Systems Division. "Enterprise-wide users can now run numerous Solaris applications on Wyse's certified platforms, including our third-generation Intel-based SMP systems. In addition, true SMP allows users to protect their investment by adding CPUs as processing needs increase." SunSoft's Solaris x86 environment offers the C2 security product, bringing mainframe-class security to the commercial UNIX environment. The C2 Basic Security Module includes features such as auditing functionality to trace system activities to individual users, making Solaris x86 attractive for commercial and federal installations. The Basic Security Module meets the C2-level requirement for the U.S. Federal government's NIST specification for operating systems. SunSoft established the Solaris x86 Certification program this June, which has enabled key system manufacturers to qualify their systems as Solaris x86 compatible. Already, more than 300 peripherals and platforms are certified to support Solaris x86 and the company is expected to certify more than 100 by the end of the year. Recently certified hardware platforms include the Dell Dimension series, NCR system 3333 line and the Olivetti LSX 5010 and 5020 systems. Devices supported include a wide array of video display cards, SCSI adapters, network adapter cards, tape subsystems, pointer devices and CD-ROM drives. SunSoft's Solaris x86 software environment is available immediately. The Solaris Desktop for the client desktop is priced at $795; Solaris Workgroup Server for the small to mid-range departmental server is priced at $1,995; and Solaris Enterprise Server for the enterprise-wide server at $5,995 in single quantity. The Solaris x86 Early Access Multiprocessing Platform Kit is available immediately at no charge. The C2 security product, is available in 30 days with media and documentation priced at $50 in single quantity.
