Details of Migration/Transition Alternatives: --------------------------------------------- SunLink Channel Gateway (VME Board) ----------------------------------- *Option A - Sun Alternatives Recommended replacement solutions dependent on customers current use of the Channel Gateway and Local 3270. Sun's connectivity options with the SunLink 8.0 IBM product family provide solutions as follows: - Network Job Entry (NJE) SunLink SNA 3270/RJE 8.0 (3770 emulation) replaces the need for NJE and bulk data transfer. SNA3270/RJE is of comparable performance to NJE (NJE over Channel Gateway vs. SNA3270/RJE over Token Ring) and less expensive, less intrusive, and much easier to install and support. SNA3270/RJE 8.0 and Token Ring (SunLink TRI/S 3.0) are available for Solaris(R) 2 operating environment. - Local 3270 sessions SunLink SNA 3270/RJE 8.0 with Token Ring, Ethernet/802.3, or FDDI/S support is a much better alternative to support large numbers of 3270 sessions - less expensive, easier to install and maintain, and capable of supporting a greater number of sessions. SNA3270/RJE 8.0, Token Ring (TRI/S 3.0), or FDDI/S 2.0 are available for Solaris 2. - Higher Throughput uses XCOM 6.2 from Legent operates over SunLink SNA Peer-to-Peer 8.0 today and in conjunction with SunLink SNA 3270/RJE 8.0 over SunLink FDDI/S 2.0 and is effective for higher throughput (>200Kbytes/second) uses. Per SunConnect, Legent has indicated they will port the XCOM product to Solaris 2, but no firm availability dates have been provided. SunConnect is in the process of making Legent a beta site for the SNA Peer-to-Peer 8.0 product. SNA3270/RJE 8.0, Token Ring (TRI/S 3.0), or FDDI/S 2.0 are available for Solaris 2. - Customer with own MVS to NFS or control unit emulation programs Currently there is no alternative. *Option B - 3rd Parties Data/Ware Development, Inc. has announced a Channel Gateway SBus products available later this year.
