The Type 5 mouse will replace the Type 4 mouse in all country kits except for the SPARCstation(TM) ELC(TM), SPARCstation IPC(TM), SPARCstation IPX(TM), and SPARCstation 2 systems. These products will continue to ship with the Type 4 mouse. The Type 4 mouse will not be offered as an X-option. SunExpress will continue to offer the Type 4 mouse. The Type 5 mouse is an optical mouse with a 1200 baud rate, the same as the Type 4 mouse. The Type 5 mouse will work with all current Sun(TM) configurations. There are no backward compatibility issues with Sun platforms and no functionality changes. Country kits shipping as of October 11, 1993 will include the Type 5 mouse except for SPARCstation ELC, SPARCstation IPC, SPARCstation IPX, and SPARCstation 2 systems. These products will continue to ship with the Type 4 mouse. Type 5 Mouse Features --------------------- * Type 5 mouse has a higher resolution of 300 CPI over the Type 4 mouse 200 CPI * Type 5 mouse uses micro switches which require less pressure to actuate * Type 5 cable has improved flexibility over the Type 4 mouse * Type 5 mouse has an improved ergonomic and aesthetic case design QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q: Will the Type 4 mouse be available after October 1993? A: Yes. The Type 4 mouse will be available with SPARCstation ELC, SPARCstation IPC, SPARCstation IPX, and SPARCstation 2 systems. SunExpress will also continue to offer the Type 4 mouse. Q. How long will support be available for existing Type 4 customers? A. Support services will be available for 5 years after last ship date, October 1998. Q. Are the Type 4 mouse and Type 5 mouse completely interchangeable? A. There are no functionality differences between the two mouse products. However, there are performance differences. Because the Type 5 mouse has a higher resolution (300 cpi which means smaller mouse movements allow for larger movements on screen), the Type 5 mouse pad must be used. Type 4 mouse will not work with the Type 5 mouse pad. Q. Is Sun offering a mechanical Type 5 mouse? A. At this time, only SunExpress is offering a mechanical mouse compatible with Sun systems. This is a standard off-the-shelf mouse, in Sun colors, modified for Sun systems.
