No other systems supplier, PC or workstation, offers such an extensive memory warranty. This is possible because of SMCC's excellent reliability due to strict qualification, process and quality requirements for SMCC memory. Customers surveyed recently made it clear that a 5 year warranty would significantly impact their purchasing decision. With this announcement SMCC removes the last barrier to customers and resellers coming to Sun for ALL their memory needs. This warranty is a 5 year limited warranty in that it covers DSIMMs (DRAM-based SIMMs) for main memory only. That is, it does not cover SRAM components, VRAM components, VRAM SIMMs or NVRAM SIMMs. This warranty is a return-to-factory warranty that covers DSIMM material. Diagnosis of memory problems, time or labor are not included in this warranty. Customers requiring diagnosis or on-site service would be charged prevailing SunService rates. Finally, this warranty starts on the day the memory is shipped to the customer site and ends 5 years from date of shipment. Proof of shipment date is required by customer. Customers will follow the same process to initiate warranty replacement that they do today for the 1 year system warranty. Listed systems, x-options and upgrades shipped to customer sites starting September 27, 1993 are affected by this new 5 year limited warranty. QUESTIONS and ANSWERS --------------------- Q. What about memory that I have in my systems today? A: Memory in these systems is covered by the system and x-option 1 year warranty. This new warranty is not retroactive and does not cover memory shipped to customer sites before September 27, 1993. If customers want to extend their current 1 year system warranty, they will need to contact SunService for a SunSpectrum(TM) service contract. Q: What about memory that on the shelf and not yet shipped to a customer site? A: This new warranty covers memory shipped to customer sites starting September 27, 1993. Memory that is on the reseller's shelf, in systems or x-options, and not yet shipped to the customer site is covered. So there is no need to rotate current inventory. Proof of shipment date is required by customer. Q. Can a customer purchase an extended warranty on memory only? A. SunSpecturm covers the entire system which includes memory. No memory-only support is offered. Q. What if after 3 years my DSIMM fails, do I get a DSIMM with another 5 year warranty? A. The total warranty period is 5 years from date of shipment. In this case, the warranty on the replacement DSIMM would be 2 years. (c) 1993 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
