MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- October 19, 1993 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today introduced a low-cost multi-port Ethernet controller card that enables customers to divide their local area network into multiple Ethernet segments for better performance and improved connectivity. The SBus Quad Ethernet Controller (SQEC) provides four fully buffered twisted-pair Ethernet ports. With SQEC, each of the Ethernet channels can run independently at 10 megabits per second. The SQEC can be used to partition heavily loaded Ethernet networks into numerous smaller networks. This allows for higher performance and reliability, since fewer systems are affected in the event of a traffic overload or network fault. SQEC can also be used as a gateway or router. A low-powered machine can serve as a gateway between four different Ethernet segments with one SQEC card. This increases routing reliability by allowing more than one path between two networks. It can also help off-load servers, which can now be used for executing, computing, database and file server tasks. The SQEC card can be used in any Sun SPARC computer with an available SBus slot running the Solaris 2.3 operating environment or a later version. Product features include support for direct memory access, full buffering for transmit and receive packets, and 10BaseT Ethernet. AUI (thicknet) and coax (thinnet) can be supported via external third-party adapter boxes. With multiple SQECs, each system can support a maximum of 20 Ethernet segments. The SBus Quad Ethernet Controller will be priced at $995 (U.S. list) and can be ordered immediately from all SMCC channels. The product will be shipped in November 1993.
