SX graphics offers acceleration for imaging functions such as panning, zooming, rotating and convolution of images, as well as accelerating color space conversion - New lower entry price for 24-bit true color, Z-buffering, 3-D graphics! SPARCstation 10SX also provides 2-D graphics at GX performance and 24-bit Gouraud Z-buffered graphics at higher performance than GS - Other SPARCstation 10 product line changes: Removal of SPARCstation 10 Model 51 64-MB configurations off the price list ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On July 6, 1993, Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announced two new exciting industry leading graphics products while also announcing revolutionary SX technology. Today SMCC announces the delivery of the SX technology with the new SPARCstation(TM) 10SX system. Today, users in image processing markets may either purchase expensive, proprietary image processing systems, or PC or Macintosh(R) systems and add expensive peripherals. With the new SX imaging capability and powerful 2-D/3-D 24-bit color graphics performance, the SPARCstation 10SX system will exceed in requirements where 24-bit color, strong graphics performance and/or color imaging is needed. The SPARCstation 10SX has an imaging accelerator integrated directly into the SPARCstation 10 memory controller, utilizing the high bandwidth 64-bit memory bus to transfer data between main memory and video memory. This results in the ability to transfer data up to 10 times faster than typical imaging systems. The strength of industry unique SPARCstation 10SX graphics is the ability to manipulate large or data intensive graphic images and files within the SX memory subsystem. SPARCstation 10SX systems are targeted at: o 24-bit accelerated color and multimedia requirements where 24-bit true color is important for high quality graphics and video o For entry 3-D graphics, where ZX performance is not requried, applications will benefit from the integrated SX graphics acceleration such as low-end MCAD, scientific visualization, animation, and oil and gas industries o Imaging requirements including medical imaging, color prepress and GIS. SX imaging technology brings affordable, high performance imaging to the desktop The highly integrated SX graphics is available only in the new SPARCstation 10SX configured systems. Upgrades to SPARCstation 10SX systems are also available. SCHEDULE TO REMOVE PRODUCT OFF THE PRICE LIST --------------------------------------------- With this announcement, the SPARCstation 10 Model 51 64-Mbyte configurations will be removed off the price list is as follows: Products removed from SalesDesk November 19, 1993 Last date to order January 21, 1994 Last date to take delivery February 28, 1994 FEATURES AND BENEFITS --------------------- o SX graphics offers high-end imaging capability in a desktop system, making advanced imaging capability more affordable o SX image processor accelerates panning, zooming, rotating, various types of convolution and color space conversion, important capabilities for imaging applications o Highly integrated SX graphics provides lower entry price for accelerated 24-bit true color, Z-buffered 2-D/3-D graphics o SPARCstation 10SX systems when configured with the SunVideo(TM) video capture and compression card, deliver a powerful 24-bit multimedia platform. The combination of SunVideo compression technology and the high performance of SX graphics provides 24-bit real time video capability o Fast decompression of video files helps video authoring and multimedia applications o Double buffering using standard memory routines supports smooth video playback HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ - SPARCstation 10SX systems require Solaris(R) 2.3 operating environment - ISDN is optional (via SBus) on SPARCstation 10SX systems - SPARCstation 10SX systems have integrated 16-bit audio and do not support the speaker box option - SPARCstation 10SX systems are available in 4 or 8-MB frame buffer versions. 8-MB SX frame buffer versions allow both high resolution mode (1280 x 1024) and 24-bit color mode - 1600 x 1280 resolution mode is not supported on SPARCstation 10SX systems - An optional second SX graphics monitor can be added to SPARCstation 10SX systems using new SX frame buffer x-options. Standard SBus frame buffers can also be added as a second monitor option AVAILABILITY ------------ - SPARCstation 10SX systems can be ordered now and will begin shipping mid-November, 1993 - Shipment of chassis upgrades to SPARCstation 10SX will begin on November 29, 1993 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Can I add a SX frame buffer to current SPARCstation systems? A. No, SX graphics is integrated into the SPARCstation 10SX memory controller and therefore only SX pre-configured systems support SX graphics frame buffer. Upgrades to SPARCstation 10SX are available from specific SPARCstation systems. Q. Why isn't the speaker box supported and ISDN offered standard on SPARCstation 10SX systems? A. The SPARCstation 10SX systems use a slightly different mother board from the SPARCstation 10 systems. This new mother board integrates the SX memory controller. Other changes to SPARCstation 10SX include moving 16-bit audio and a speaker inside the system. Audio input/output mini-plugs are located on the rear panel. To make room for the internal audio, ISDN and related ISDN connectors were removed from the rear panel on SPARCstation 10SX systems. For this reason, upgrades to SPARCstation 10SX systems are a complete chassis swap package. SPARCstation 10SX systems support SPARCstation 10 SBus options and SuperSPARC(TM) MBus cpu modules. Q. Why is SPARCstation 10SX a Solaris 2.3 based system only? A. New support for SX graphics has been incorporated into the Solaris 2.3 standard release. Q. What application graphics are supported by SPARCstation 10SX? A. SX graphics are supported by all Solaris 2.x graphics window systems Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), including the XGL(TM), XIL(TM) libraries, DPS (Display PostScript(R)), and the OpenWindows(TM) Version 3.3 (X11R5) window system. SPARCstation 10SX imaging is supported by the XIL library. Q. Are there applications available specific to SX graphics? A. Yes, currently there are several software vendors offering or will soon offer applications that take full advantage of SX graphics. GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE -------------------- Processor performance ratings for SPARCstation 10SX systems are identical to the other SPARCstation 10 family systems. All the following graphics performance numbers were measured on a SPARCstation 10SX Model 51 and SPARCstation 10 Model 51 systems for TurboGXplus(TM) and ZX frame buffers. SX and ZX performance figures represent 24-bit images. TurboGXplus are 8-bit images. SX Imaging Performance - Fill (32-bit pixels) - 48.7 million pixels/sec. - Pan/Copy (32-bit pixels) - 19.7 million pixels/sec. - Zoom (2x, pixel replication) - 19.3 million pixels/sec. (50%, pixel replication) - 7.29 million pixels/sec. - Convolution (8 bit, 3x3 full kernel) - 4.1 million pixels/sec. (8 bit, 7x7 separable kernel) - 1.7 million pixels/sec. - Lookup (8-8) - 7.84 million pixels/sec. - Rotate (45 degrees) - 2.42 million pixels/sec. - Blend - 1.86 million pixels/sec.
