Product Marketing number change and processor change for 600MP SuperSPARC and related Customer. Service upgrades EFFECTIVE May 11, 1993. Model 512 offers 25% more power at the same price. Volume availability in Q1FY94. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following announcement summarizes transition plans for the SPARCserver 600MP (based on SuperSPARC(TM) processors only) and related upgrades. It delineates the transition of the Viking model 52 to model 512. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announces the SPARCserver(TM) 600MP model 512 system. This is two 50-MHz processors on two modules. This is an orderable package option and will be available in Q1 `94. Please note that the model 512 (@50 MHz) replaces the model 52 (@45 MHz). SPARCserver 600MP will also support the single Model 51 processor. There will not be an orderable package option for the Model 51. Instead, customers will need to order UG-M41-M51 along with a SPARCserver 600MP M41-based package option. The option will ship in Q1FY94, upgrading the customer from 40 MHz to 50 MHz processing power. With 50-MHz modules shipping in volume in Q1FY94, SPARCserver 600MP customers realize a 25% increase in performance while continuing to maximize their investment. With this announcement, SMCC continues its strong support of the SPARCserver 600MP line, the marketshare leader for MP UNIX(R) servers in the industry. TRANSITION SCHEDULE ------------------- Transition of the SPARCserver 600MP model 52 to model 512 is effective May 11. SPARCserver 600MP model 512 orders will be accepted through June 30, 1993. No orders will be accepted for these Model 52 products after June 30, 1993. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Why did the numbering scheme change with the new model 51 multiprocessing system? What do the numbers mean? A. The two digit approach did not allow for multi-processing systems without SuperCache (like the SPARCstation 10 Model 402MP). The first digit in the number indicates processor speed. The higher the number, the faster the processor. The second number indicates whether or not the system has SuperCache. The number one means yes, a zero means no. The third digit indicates the number of processors. So, a Model 512MP means a two-way MP system based on 50-MHz SuperSPARC with SuperCache. Q. Why isn't the Model 54 becoming a Model 514MP? A. The Model 54 remains unchanged. It will ship as a 4-way 45-MHz SuperSPARC system, so there was no need to change the product name. Q. I just placed an order for a Model 52 system. What happens to the order? A. No action will be required on the customer's part to change an order. The order will automatically be converted to the Model 512MP configuration. No orders will be accepted for these Model 52 products after June 30, 1993. Quoting for the Model 52 systems will cease immediately. Q. How are current upgrade paths affected by the new M512? A. Current upgrade paths are affected in name only. The same paths exist.
