License upgrades may be required when adding processors. SMCC systems vary in their included licenses. e.g. SMCC servers support an unlimited number of users/clients while an SMCC desktop supports 2 users/clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ************************************************************* * * * - Solaris Desktop License allows additional processors * * to be added to SPARCstations without additional * * licensing * * * * - Solaris Desktop License now allows access by two * * concurrent users or clients versus one previously * * allowed * * * * - All Sun servers ship licensed to service an unlimited * * number of users and clients under Solaris 2.2 * * * * - To facilitate the transition to Solaris 2, * * SMCC continues to license applicable systems and * * system boards for both Solaris 2.x and 1.x, at no * * additional charge to the customer * * * * - SMCC is maintaining attractive Solaris upgrade * * pricing to allow customers to more easily migrate to * * Solaris 2.x * * * * - Systems covered under support contracts will * * automatically receive upgrades to Solaris 2.2 * * * ************************************************************* With the release of Solaris(R) 2.2, Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC)(TM) is announcing a new flexible licensing scheme that allows processors to be added to a desktop system without having to upgrade the Solaris license that ships with the system. Also, desktops are now allowed to have up to two concurrent users or clients running on a system, an increase over the one user allowed previously. All server systems ship licensed to service an unlimited number of users and clients under Solaris 2.2. SMCC sells its system and board products already licensed to use the latest release of the Solaris operating system available when the systems ship, as part of the price of the products. To help ease the transition to Solaris 2.x, SMCC continues to license systems and boards capable of running Solaris 1.x, for both the latest release of the Solaris 2.x and all previous Solaris 1.x releases that support those platforms, at no additional cost to the customer. This licensing strategy allows customers to run the Solaris 1.x environment until they are ready to migrate, and then upgrade to the Solaris 2.x release that was current when the system shipped, without paying an upgrade fee. SMCC is also maintaining the low-priced upgrades from Solaris 1.x to Solaris 2.2, to help with the migration to Solaris 2. SOLARIS LICENSING ----------------- The type of Solaris license determines in what capacity a system or board may be used. Optional Solaris licenses are available to further extend the system capabilities. Only two criteria are used to determine what type of license is required: 1) number of concurrent clients and users, and 2) number of processors. The section below lists the system usage enabled by each type of Solaris license, discusses upgrade paths available to expand how the system is used, and denotes the Solaris license(s) that ship with each Sun system or system board. Definition of a User -------------------- A user is a direct login, an X host session, or an rlogin. Definition of a Client ---------------------- A system is a client of another system if it obtains one of the following services from the other system: * File services - files using NFS, or other file sharing protocols - swap disk space - home directory disk space - Solaris and/or boot binaries * Compute or database services * Network naming or security services Solaris Desktop License ----------------------- A Solaris Desktop License allows up to two concurrent users or clients to run Solaris on a system or board. It also permits the system to be used as a print server and for remote process execution in support of applications or RPCs. Solaris Uniprocessor Workgroup Server License --------------------------------------------- A Solaris Uniprocessor Workgroup Server License allows an unlimited number of users and clients to utilize the services of Solaris on one uniprocessor system. Solaris Dualprocessor Workgroup Server License ----------------------------------------------- A Solaris Dualprocessor Workgroup Server License allows an unlimited number of users and clients to utilize the services of Solaris on one dual-processor system. Solaris Enterprise Server License --------------------------------- A Solaris Enterprise Server License allows an unlimited number of users and clients to utilize the services of Solaris on one system with three to eight processors. Adding Processors ----------------- Adding processors to a uniprocessor or dualprocessor system acting as a server requires an additional Solaris license. No additional licensing is required to add processors to a system licensed as a Solaris desktop. Adding one processor to a system licensed as a Solaris Uniprocessor Workgroup Server requires a Uniprocessor to Dualprocessor Workgroup Server Upgrade License (SOLUS-2S-L). Adding two to seven processors to a system licensed as a Solaris Uniprocessor Workgroup Server requires a Uniprocessor Workgroup Server to Enterprise Server Upgrade License (SOLUS-ES-L). Adding one to six processors to a system licensed as a Solaris Dual-processor Workgroup Server requires an upgrade from a Dual-processor Workgroup Server to Enterprise Server License (SOL2S-ES-L). Upgrading Solaris Desktop License to Solaris Server License ----------------------------------------------------------- If a system that shipped with a Solaris Desktop License will be used as a server, the system must be upgraded to the appropriate Solaris server license. Upgrading a uniprocessor Desktop system requires a Desktop to Uniprocessor Workgroup Server Upgrade License (SOLC-US-L). Upgrading a dual-processor Desktop system requires two upgrade licenses: - a Desktop to Uniprocessor Workgroup Server License to enable the use of the system as a server (SOLC-US-L) AND - a Uniprocessor to Dualprocessor Workgroup Server License to use both processors (SOLUS-2S-L). Upgrading a three to eight processor Desktop system also requires two upgrade licenses: - a Desktop to Uniprocessor Workgroup Server License to enable the use of the system as a server (SOLC-US-L) AND - a Uniprocessor Workgroup Server to Enterprise Server License to use three to eight processors (SOLUS-ES-L). Solaris License Included with Sun System and System Board Products ------------------------------------------------------------------ The following matrix provides information about the type of Solaris license and Solaris release(s) included with Sun system and system board products. A Server license can only be used to upgrade a system licensed as a Server under a previous release to a Server under Solaris 2.2. It CANNOT be used to upgrade a system licensed as a Desktop to a Server. - To upgrade systems licensed as Desktops to the latest Solaris 2.x release, a Solaris Desktop Upgrade License (SOLD-LF) is required. Systems covered under support contracts will receive upgrades to Solaris 2.2 at no additional charge. NOTE: Solaris 2.x upgrade licenses only authorize the use of the latest Solaris 2.x release on the system or board. To upgrade from a previous Solaris 1.x release to Solaris 1.1 Version A, a Solaris 1.x upgrade license is required. See the price list for ordering instructions. Additional Solaris Licensing Information ---------------------------------------- When a system or system board is licensed for Solaris 1.1 and an upgrade to Solaris 2.x, either of these releases may be run on one system or board without incurring additional licensing fees. The Solaris license is NOT transferred when system or system board is resold without authorization from Sun. The date of shipment of the system or board determines the Solaris release levels for which it is licensed. The Solaris End User Object Code License that ships with Sun system and system board products denotes the terms and conditions governing the use of Solaris. Customers not able to abide by the terms of this license, or who do not have other Solaris licensing agreements in place with Sun are not entitled use Solaris. A copy of the Solaris Object Code License can be found in the price list.
