A: The SPARCcenter 2000 will support 50-MHz modules with 2-MB of Ecache per CPU in Q1FY94. The delay in availability is due to the need to develop new packaging for the 2-MB Ecache module. Q: Will the 50-MHz, 2-MB Ecache module require a special version of Solaris? A: The new modules are fully compatible with Solaris 2.2. Q: Will the new modules cost more than the current 40-MHz modules? A: The new modules will cost more, and they will be bundled into new, more generously configured systems. For complete information on SPARCcenter 2000 pricing and systems options see pricing section. Q: Will customers who take delivery of 40 MHz based systems now be penalized if they want to upgrade to 50 Mhz based systems later? A: No. The new pricing is structured so that customers who take delivery of 40 MHz based systems now will not pay any penalty for upgrading to 50 MHz based systems in Q1FY94. Q: How many SPARCcenter 2000s have shipped? A: Almost 150 worldwide, including internal units. Q: Why would a customer buy a SPARCcenter 2000, when both the SPARCcenter 2000 and the SPARCserver 1000 support only 8 CPUs with Solaris 2.2 and the SPARCserver 1000 is less expensive? A: The SPARCcenter 2000 allows for much greater capacity and expandibility than the SPARCserver 1000, offering a longer growth path and greater protection for customers' initial investment. Even with an equal number of processors, the SPARCcenter 2000 has twice the bus bandwidth and more disk capacity than the SPARCserver 1000. In addition, with the introduction of CPU modules with 2 MB of Ecache, the SPARCcenter 2000 will often outperform the SPARCsever 1000 by 15 - 25 % in otherwise equal configurations. Finally, support for fully configured SPARCcenter 2000's will be available in the next release of Solaris 2.x, due later this calendar year. Q: Why are the modules with 2-MB of Ecache only available on the SPARCcenter 2000? Is this a marketing decision? A: This is not a marketing decision. The reasons are technical. Sun systems can support up to 1-MB of Ecache per CPU per system bus. The SPARCcenter 2000 has two system buses, so it can support 2-MB of Ecache per CPU. Q: The SPARCcenter 2000 is being rolled out in a phased release. What are the phases? A: Phase 1 is based on Solaris 2.2. It supports up to 8 CPUs, 66 disks, (~138 GB using 2.1-GB disks), and 2.5 GB of memory. Phase 2 is based on the next release of Solaris 2.x. It supports the fully configured system, including up to 20 CPUs, 234 disks, (491 GB, using 2.1-GB disks), and 5 GB of memory. For further details, contact your server driver. Q: I've seen marketing collateral that states that 1 Terabyte of disk is supported on the SPARCcenter 2000. How is that possible? A: Using products that have not yet been announce by SMCC. Information on this is available under non-disclosure. Contact your Sun rep. Q: Will the new half height, 535-MB disks announced with the SPARCserver 1000 work on the SPARCcenter 2000? A: No. The 535-MB disks are single ended SCSI disks. The SPARCcenter 2000 supports only differential SCSI disks. Q. When a customers buys an upgrade to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series, which version of Solaris is required? A. The SPARCcenter 2000 runs with Solaris 2.2 or greater. Upgrade customers can order Solaris 2.x media (SOL-CF) at no charge. Customers upgrading to Solaris 2.x are also required to order a server upgrade licence at no charge. See the pricebook or SunWin (Token number to be announced next Sun Monday) for more information. Q. What should a customer do to with their S690 model 120 or model 41 modules when upgrading to the SPARCcenter 2000 50Mhz system? A. The customer has a choice of using these modules on another Sun system, or upgrading to the model 51 with 2MByte Ecache and ordering an additional system board to use the modules in their new system. Q. The new 50MHz upgrades to SC2000 look a great deal more expensive than the current 40MHz versions, even after the 7/1 price increase. Why is this? A. There are 3 reasons. The 50MHz version has 2MB of ecache instead of 1MB, the memory is increased from 64MB to 128MB, and the number of 2.1GB DSCSI drives included is increased from 2 to 4.
