The announcement was made in conjunction with the Annual Solaris Developer Conference being held here today. "While SMCC won't be selling x86 hardware, we are the leading end-user distribution and support organization for Solaris worldwide. It's a natural fit for us to use that expertise and experience to bring Solaris to end users. By providing x86 end-users with Solaris we give them a single, open robust software environment for heterogenous hardware platforms," said Larry Hambly, Vice President of Marketing for SMCC. "As the common open software environment evolves Solaris 2 will be the basis for our implementation of those capabilities." Specific end-user pricing for Solaris on x86 platforms will be published by first customer shipment in May.
