Phone: (617) 494-8202 Santa Clara, Calif., March 29, 1993 -- SunSoft, Inc., the system software subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that it would develop a version of its Solaris software environment for Motorola's PowerPC reduced-instruction set computing (RISC) microprocessor architecture. Motorola plans to cooperate with SunSoft's development team to ensure that the Solaris software environment will be optimized to run on the PowerPC platform. "Today's announcement with SunSoft underscores the continued expansion of the PowerPC architecture in the computing industry's major markets," said Murray Goldman, assistant general manager of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. "Motorola is committed to bringing the performance and versatility of the PowerPC architecture to a variety of UNIX environments as customer needs dictate." According to Scott McNealy, chairman and CEO of Sun Microsystems, Inc., "The industry momentum for Solaris continues. With Solaris available on PowerPC, our volume position in the enterprise-wide computing market will significantly increase." The companies will announce more details at a later date. PowerPC microprocessors, being designed, manufactured and marketed by Motorola and IBM, are intended to support a full range of embedded control and computing applications -- from handheld, portable and desktop computers, to midrange workstations and servers, to fault-tolerant and supercomputing systems.
