NEW PC-NFS NETWORKING SOFTWARE FROM SUNSELECT BROADENS SUPPORT FOR MAJOR PC ENVIRONMENTS Version 5.0 Enhancements Include Support for Windows Sockets API, Improved Terminal Emulation, NetBIOS Support, and Server-Based Licensing CHELMSFORD, Mass.--March 22, 1993--SunSelect, a business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today introduced a new version of its industry-leading PC-NFS(R) networking software, which allows users to connect personal computers (PCs) with a wide range of powerful platforms including UNIX(R) systems, minicomputers, mainframes and others. The new version, PC-NFS 5.0, adds support for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) for Workgroups and Novell(R) NetWare(R), allowing users of these environments to share applications, files, printers, and e-mail across any TCP/IP or ONC(TM)/NFS(R) network. The product continues to support the Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS(R) operating environments. PC-NFS 5.0 software is among the first products to support the Windows Sockets Application Programming Interface (API), a standard interface based on the "sockets" paradigm. This allows any network MS-Windows application written to the API to run unchanged over any TCP/IP network. As a result, users will be able to run a wider range of off-the-shelf applications on TCP/IP networks than ever before. Version 5.0 of PC-NFS software includes other new features and enhancements. PC-NFS 5.0 now contains Telnet and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) applications for both MS-Windows and MS-DOS. The Telnet applications, from Diversified Computer Systems, Inc., have been expanded to support VT52 - VT320 terminal emulation, making it easier for users to run remote host applications from their PCs. In addition, PC-NFS 5.0 now supports the NetBIOS interface, allowing users to take advantage of a greater number of custom and commercial PC network applications. Server-based licensing is available to simplify network administration; PC-NFS licenses can now be installed and administered from a SPARC(R) server running the Solaris(R) operating environment. The product also features enhanced on-line MS-Windows help to complement the award-winning documentation of PC-NFS. In addition, a new companion e-mail product, SelectMAIL(TM), also announced today, allows MS-DOS and MS-Windows users to exchange mail files with other PCs, UNIX system workstations, and mobile computing environments (see related release). About PC-NFS PC-NFS software is now the industry's most widely used PC-to-enterprise networking solution, with a 70 percent share of the personal computer TCP/IP and NFS(R) networking market. More than one million users are now running PC-NFS software in a wide range of companies representing many industries. Several companies are implementing PC-NFS as an alternative to traditional network operating systems in order to take full advantage of open, client-server environments. In addition to PC-NFS 5.0 software and SelectMAIL, the PC-NFS product family includes PC-NFS Advanced Telnet, which extends the terminal emulation capabilities of PC-NFS; and the PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit, which provides software developers with development tools to create client-server applications that run on multivendor networks.
