Both technology demonstrations use the model XV-24SVC-VIO XVideo(TM) board and demonstration software from Parallax Graphics called RTVnet. One inter-booth ATM connection will show ATM multicast distribution of full motion, near-broadcast-quality video, using the Hughes LAN Systems ATM-based Enterprise Hub as the video switch. The other will demonstrate high-quality video between the Parallax and SunConnect booths using the newly-announced ATM switch from SynOptics. "Parallax Graphics has taken the lead in providing ATM-specific video applications," says John Ricketson, vice president of marketing for Parallax Graphics. "We are very pleased with the interoperability of the ATM vendors' equipment. Realtime high quality video challenges both the ATM switch and the workstation for bandwidth and reliability." Ricketson says the Hughes network illustrates that through XVideo, high quality video multicasting over ATM is possible today. The Sun/SynOptics network proves that ATM technology can support high quality video even with heavy cross traffic. Networked video demonstrations using XVideo will be on display at other Interop vendor booths including AT&T Data Communications, AT&T Network Systems, Fore Systems, ADAPTIVE NET, and Newbridge Networks. Networked video is particularly applicable to such markets as financial services, military command and control (C4I), retailing, concurrent engineering, manufacturing, remote medical consultation and broadcast and cable television. XVideo is Parallax Graphics' highly successful line of video hardware and software for Sun SPARCstations and SPARC compatible workstations. XVideo supports up to two channels of live video display, video output, and JPEG image compression. RTVnetwork software generates high quality video by capturing and reproducing full NTSC resolution video at 60 interlaced fields per second. Parallax Graphics of Santa Clara, California, designs, manufactures, and markets high performance video systems for networked UNIX workstations from Sun Microsystems. Parallax hardware systems and software toolkits provide the highest quality for video applications ranging from computer-based training and video teleconferencing to scientific visualization and medical imaging. In 1989, Parallax was purchased by publicly-held Dynatech Corporation (OTC:DYTC), a $500 million supplier of high technology products and services. McAllister Org: ANDATACO Phone: (619) 453-9191 or (800) 334-9191, fax: (619) 453-9294 e- mail: inquire@andataco.com San Diego, CA, March 8, 1993 -- ANDATACO, the leading provider of products and solutions for the networked, multi-user, UNIX workstation market announced the addition of three new 8mm tape subsystems. These subsystems offer exciting new features and price/performance enhancements over existing 8mm helical-scan tape subsystems. The EXB/8205 half-height 5.25" 8mm cartridge tape subsystems are exclusively designed for data processing purposes. With data compression, the EXB/8205's capacity increases to 5 GBytes and sustained transfer rate typically improves to 500 kilobytes per second. Additional performance enhancements include high-speed search exceeding 19 MBytes per second and 1 MByte speed matching buffer. This tape subsystem is SCSI-2 compatible and can be configured for synchronous or asynchronous transfer. The EXB/8505 is a half-height 8mm cartridge tape subsystem which offers a compression algorithm resulting in two to five times the capacity of existing full-height subsystems. Using a two to one average, the capacity increases to 10 GBytes, the transfer rate increases to 1 MB/sec and the search rate increases to 75 MB/sec. This subsystem has fewer moving parts, a new streamlined tape loading mechanism, new tape door and higher reliability than other full-height subsystems. Tape library options for half-height tape drives include the EXB/60. This robotic cartridge handling subsystem offers random or sequential access to data. These subsystems also offer an MTBF of 80,000 hours and a Bit Error Rate (BER) of 1017... the best in the industry. A new two-year warranty offers users twice the peace of mind. The EXB/8500c, a full-height 8mm cartridge tape subsystem, extends the performance and capacity of the EXB/8500 through data compression. It can store up to 25 GBytes of data on a single 8mm cartridge. The compression algorithm is contained in a proprietary IC and constantly monitors the compression ratio to determine whether or not compressing the data will actually benefit the user's storage capacity and throughput. The sustainable transfer rate is increased up to 2.5 MBytes per second. Tape library options for the EXB/8500c include the EXB/10i cartridge handling subsystem. User can reliably automate all of their data storage management needs with true unattended backup, automatic file restore and scheduled archiving. This robotic cartridge handling subsystem provides random or sequential access to as much as 100 GBytes of data.
