Russian Company To Use SPARC MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. March 16, 1993 Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today signed a technology licensing and joint development agreement with ELVIS+ Ltd., a private Russian corporation, to develop wireless network communication technology to be incorporated into its nomadic computing strategy. SMCC will also be taking a 10 percent equity position in ELVIS+. ELVIS+, a Russian acronym that stands for Electronic Computer and Information Systems, was founded by Dr. Alexander (Sasha) Galitsky. An expert in wireless communications, Dr. Galitsky was also chief designer of a new generation of communication satellites for the Russian computer space program. At ELVIS+, Dr. Galitsky leads a team of 53 noted Russian computer scientists, considered to be Russia's top experts in wireless communication technology. The two-year-old company designs wireless and space-capable communication systems as well as fault tolerant, imaging and control systems. ELVIS+ chose SMCC as its U.S. partner after discussions with many other major U.S. computer companies. As part of the agreement, ELVIS+ will not only work jointly with SMCC engineers on wireless communication projects but the company has also agreed to use the Sun(TM) SPARC(R) computing platform for all future workstation-based products they develop. One of the biggest potential applications of the company's technological expertise is the design of a wireless communications network utilizing SPARCstation(TM) computers. This network may one day provide a modern communication infrastructure so desperately needed in the former Soviet Union. "This [Russian] team has a grand vision, just as Sun itself did ten years ago," said Esther Dyson, editor of Rel-EAST, who has visited the team in Moscow. "And like Sun, it has the coherence, energy and persistence to carry it out despite difficult conditions in the former Soviet Union. What's exciting is that Sun, too, still has a vision in a new area and that the two groups are working together to carry it out." The scientists at ELVIS+ are not the first to work with Sun Microsystems companies. In March 1992, Sun Microsystems Laboratories, Inc., (SMLI) signed a cooperative long-term research agreement with Boris Babaian, a leading Russian supercomputer expert. In September 1992, SunPro, Inc., a Sun software development tools business, hired a team of 33 Russian software engineers, led by Babaian, to work on SunPro commercial software development products.
