---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Solaris CMW 1.0 SunFLASH Vol 51 #13 March 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- *************************************************** * Solaris CMW 1.0 - the high-trust version of the * * most popular UNIX workstation operating system * * * * Complete trusted distributed CMW solution * * * * Compatible with a large number of customers' * * favorite commercial applications * * * * Ease of use for users and administrators * *************************************************** With the Solaris(R) Compartmented Mode Workstation (CMW) environment, Sun(R) delivers a high-trust operating system with distributed client-server computing and the look, feel, and functionality users expect from Sun. Sun has adapted the industry's most powerful UNIX(R) operating system--with true multitasking power, an easy-to-use graphical user interface, and a host of personal and workgroup productivity tools--to deliver the security protections sensitive information needs. For the first time, it is all in a distributed environment. Unlike standalone trusted systems based on a mainframe and terminals or PCs, Sun's Solaris CMW makes it possible to join all computing systems into a single distributed, trusted computing base. The trusted networking software passes security information along with communications between computers, so people can share information across an entire enterprise while security is maintained. There's no compromise with Solaris CMW--in security *or* performance. Essentially, the system's Secure OpenWindows(TM) environment works just like the commercial windowing system--but the security features don't hamper the way you work. It's easy to cut and paste text or graphics between windows. Launch applications, navigate the filesystem, and print documents with labeled headers and footers simply by dragging files onto application icons. Most secure operating systems confine users to outmoded hardware running last year's applications. Not Solaris CMW! With Solaris CMW, there is freedom to choose from an enormous number of applications and to run these applications on Sun's SPARCstations and SPARCservers. Customers can select from the most powerful relational database management systems available today, including those from ASK/Ingres, Informix(R), ORACLE(R), and Sybase(R). All without giving up the desktop applications many people use every day, including FrameMaker(R), Interleaf(R), Lotus(R) 1-2-3(R), and more. These packages yield the same great performance in a secure distributed computing configuration that they get in the Solaris commercial operating environment. What's more, users can take full advantage of Sun's DeskSet(TM) productivity tools, making UNIX easy for everyday users. The toolset is augmented by features not found in the commercial suite, such as PostMaster--the trusted e-mail tool--and trusted login and password features. SOLARIS CMW -- the first trusted distributed computing system that can be fully relied upon to provide the security that customers so urgently need along with the performance that they have come to expect from Sun. For single user machines a minimum of 16-MBytes of memory is required (32-MBytes is preferred). A diskful machine must have at least one disk that is larger than 200-MBytes. o In general, the standard Sun peripheral options that are supported by the evaluated machines under Solaris(R) 1.0 are supported under Solaris CMW 1.0. AVAILABILITY o Solaris CMW 1.0 is currently available for ordering and shipment. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 1. What about the network (diskless) operation? - Full trusted network operation for Solaris CMW, including diskless operation was achieved in mid-July. The FCS product contains all network functionality. 2. What is the applications story for Solaris CMW? - One of the major design goals was to facilitate the running of trusted and COTS applications on Solaris CMW. This was followed by staffed COTS testing and porting activites. As a result, more than 100 third-party COTS applications and Sun bundled and unbundled applications products have run on pre-FCS versions of Solaris CMW. It will be up to the third-party vendors to test and certify their products on the FCS release of Solaris CMW. Examples of applications that have run on CMW are Interleaf, Island Write/Draw/Paint(R), RTWorks, Clarity Rapport, BBN/Slate, SAS Products, WordPerfect, SoftPC, EyeNode, SysAdmin, Accord, XCalc, OpenServer 400, Aid-de-Camp, Synchronize, SunPICS, DataFlo, XCalibur, ACCELL/SQL, Aster*x, SysMon, CLIPS, GainMomentum, GainExposure. 3. What about database applications and CMW? - Sun has been working very closely with the major database vendors to ensure that database products are available to run on Solaris CMW 1.0. Oracle has announced the availability of a port of its trusted database product (Trusted Oracle 7) to Solaris CMW; Sybase has certified its untrusted database product on Solaris CMW. The Informix trusted product has run on Solaris CMW as well. We have also been working closely with Ingres, Software AG, Borland (Interbase), and Stanford Research Institute (Sea View). 4. What are the discriminators for Solaris CMW 1.0? o Distributed Trusted Computing Base integral to system o Robust COTS Applications Environment o Nearly current with shipping hardware and software o Product developed in-house by Sun, not a port of other kernel o Only CMW product with trusted networking in evaluation o Sun "Look and Feel" o X11 OpenWindows 5. What about MOTIF applications? - Most MOTIF applications will run within the OpenLook Window Manager without modification. Examples are FrameMaker, Lotus, SAMMI, Delorme X-Map, etc. U.S. PRICING ------------ Solaris CMW items will appear in the End User and Reseller Price Lists Short Order List Discount Same Day Description Number Price Category Service Price ======================================================================== Single User License, TSX-1.0-21 $3000 A N/A CDROM for Solaris CMW 1.0, Release Manual CDROM for Solaris TSX-E-1.0-20 $150 B N/A CMW 1.0 Encryption Kit Single User License, TNPT-1.0-1-4-21 $795 B N/A CDROM Media and Documentation for Trusted NeWSprint Ten Single User TNPT-X-X-X-L10 $4995 B N/A Licenses, Media, Documentation for Trusted NeWSprint Documentation Box TSX-1.0-09 $1495 B N/A for Solaris CMW 1.0 (Note: TSX-1.0-09 will not be accessible in QuoteMaster until Jan. 25) CUSTOMER TRAINING o Tentative SunEd plans for CMW Training are listed below.
