SMCC thoroughly tests its storage and memory products for 100% compatibility and peak performance. With these aggressive prices and extensive testing, Sun offers the best value for mass storage and memory products. The new discount category A for mass storage products effectively lowers the actual prices to customers and makes Sun mass storage products more attractive for Sun(TM) resellers. The new memory prices are the most competitive ever for Sun. The X164F, 64-MB memory expansion for SPARCstation(TM) 10 systems, is now available in volume at a much lower price to complement new database and multiprocessing (MP) applications. Increased memory also improves SPARCstation 10 windowing performance and allows additional clients on SPARCserver 10 systems. As usual, these new memory and mass storage prices are dramatically lower than comparable products from other system vendors. o No major system competitor can match Sun's aggressive mass storage and memory price/performance. Most don't even come close o Just one more reason to choose Sun workstations and servers Sun also offers better value than third party vendors. o All these products are backed by a level of engineering commitment no third party can match. Sun's disk and memory products offer superior quality, reliability, and performance, yet are priced competitively with third parties o Third party memory prices are volatile. Suppliers have recently raised prices again to third parties, by 33-66%. Sun is a stable source of supply and very competitively priced o Only Sun memory products meet Sun's stringent requirements for soft error rate (SER), design, speed, test, IC fabrication process, manufacturing, quality and price. Today's higher speed CPUs demand higher quality DRAMs. Sun does not publish SIMM specifications, which detail over 40 parameters. Third parties' claim of 100% compatibility is not true In addition, Sun's mass storage and new memory products are now backed by a full ONE-YEAR return-to-factory warranty. TRANSITION SCHEDULE ------------------- Transition of 424-MB SCSI-2 disk x-options (X540A and X541A): September 3, 1993 Last date to quote November 5, 1993 Last date to order February 2, 1994 Last requested ship date HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ The 535-MB Fast SCSI-2 drive requires Solaris(R) 1.0 or later release. This operating system support is the same as the 424-MB SCSI-2 drive. The 535-MB Fast SCSI-2 internal expansion disk is supported in SPARCstation 2 and SPARCstation 10 systems and SBus Expansion Box (SES/C.) AVAILABILITY ------------ The new discount category A for mass storage products and new prices for mass storage options, memory options are effective immediately. The new internal 535-MB disk is orderable and available immediately. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q: Are there any mass storage products that are still in category B? A: Yes. The SunCD, 424-MB SCSI-2, 1.3-GB SCSI-2 and 1.3-GB IPI x-option products. Q: Are these price changes in addition to the category change? A: Yes. The price changes are in addition to the category change, giving customers even lower prices in most cases. Q: Is there also a service price reduction for these expansion options? A: There is no change to the service pricing of these expansion options. Q: Is the new internal 535-MB disk option available from SunExpress? A: Yes, the new internal 535-MB disk option is available from SunExpress. Q: How will the Sumitomo epoxy-resin factory explosion affect Sun memory prices? A: This explosion will probably increase 4 Mbit DRAM leadtime to all customers worldwide. It will not increase Sun's prices in the near term, as has been the case with many third party suppliers. Sun is a major customer to multiple, global sources of DRAMs and SIMMs. We have long term agreements with suppliers and do not see the market volatility that small third parties see.
