Central Bank of Estonia Selects Sun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMCC SIGNS FIRST DISTRIBUTOR AGREEMENT IN ESTONIA Central Bank of Estonia Selects Sun MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- August 23, 1993 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that it has appointed Microlink A/S as its first distributor in Estonia. The agreement will allow Microlink to distribute Sun(R) products throughout the country. In an unusual move, SMCC is supporting its Estonia operation through new regional headquarters for the Nordic and Baltic states that has been set up in Stockholm. This new geographic organization is headed by Elis Nemes, who cited the close business ties and geopolitical affinity between the two regions as reasons for this alignment. Esther Dyson, editor of Rel-EAST, commented: "It's a pleasure to see a company supporting Estonia from Sweden as a separate country rather than as an appendage of Russia. I think the local market will really appreciate Sun's approach." According to Bo Gustafsson, SMCC's business development director for the Nordic and Baltic regions, "Microlink has the expertise to help take Sun to the number one position in the Estonian UNIX market and will be a valuable partner as we seek to realize the full potential of this region." As the leading distributor of high-technology products in Estonia, Microlink dominates the country's PC market with its own locally manufactured equipment. "We have worked closely with Sun to develop a plan that will take Sun and Microlink to a similar position in the UNIX workstation/server market. Sun's arrival in Estonia represents a tremendous opportunity for computer users in research, industry and management to access the best computer technology," said Microlink president, Rainer Nolvak. Microlink and Sun have recently been awarded a contract with the country's most prominent bank. The Central Bank of Estonia has selected Sun SPARCstation and SPARCserver systems, running the Solaris operating environment, as their software development platform for commercial database applications. Software developed on Sun systems will be used to support a UNIX-based inter-banking message system and will boost the accuracy, speed and capacity of functions performed in the front office, as well as the middle and back office environments. "Sun's innovative technology offers the kind of CASE, networking and software solutions required to meet the stringent requirements of this project," said Rein Minka, director of the Central Bank of Estonia. "Sun has always had vision; its technology allows companies the flexibility to grow as they need without pre-committing precious resources. This is ideal for any business, especially in a market and economy that are expanding as rapidly as ours."
