It can when you upgrade from a SPARCclassic(TM) X X-terminal to a SPARCclassic workstation. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announces a plug-and-play, customer installable upgrade that allows the SPARCclassic X X-terminal to be upgraded to a SPARCclassic workstation with 16 MB of memory, a 424-MB SCSI disk drive, and a desktop client 2.x Solaris(R) license. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - The disk included with the upgrade does not have JumpStart(TM) installed. Customers will be required to complete a full Solaris installation - The 1-MB SIMMs within the SPARCclassic X 4-MB configuration are not supported on the SPARCclassic workstation - The 4-MB SIMMs within the SPARCclassic X 8-MB configuration are supported on the SPARCclassic workstation SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - Upgrades to SPARCclassic are licensed for Solaris 2.x. If media is required, customers may order this at no charge AVAILABILITY ------------- Upgrades from SPARCclassic X X-terminal to SPARCclassic workstation are orderable immediately and will be available for shipment August 10, 1993. Computing needs change over time and customers need to migrate to the latest technologies to stay competitive. The upgrade from a SPARCclassic X x-terminal to a SPARCclassic workstation provides you with a flexible, cost effective method of migrating to client-server computing should their computing needs change. Q. What is included in the upgrade kit to convert my X-terminal to a SPARCclassic workstation? A. The user-installable upgrade kit contains: o 8 MB or 16 MB of DRAM memory o A plug-replaceable NVRAM o 424-MB hard drive o A Solaris desktop client license o Upgrade documentation Q. Why are there two upgrade kits? A. Customers with an 8-MB SPARCclassic X will be able to migrate their memory to the SPARCclassic workstation. Therefore, these customers will order the 8-MB upgrade. Customers with the 4-MB SPARCclassic X will be unable to migrate their memory, thus they will order the 16-MB upgrade configuration. Q. How can a customer run Solaris 1.1 when they upgrade to the SPARCclassic workstation? A. Customers upgrading to a SPARCclassic workstation and wish to run Solaris 1.1 will need to purchase the Solaris 1.1 Version C license and media.
