Exceeding the requirements for these types of information systems, SPARCclassic X provides a new level of ease of use with its centralized, point-and-click administration tools. In addition, SPARCclassic X X-terminal's aggressively, low-priced plug-and-play upgrade protects the customer's investment when the time comes to migrate their application to fully distributed, client-server computing. The SPARCclassic X X-Xterminal also meets the challenge of technical computing markets such as CASE and CAD/CAM. With performance from 1.54 to 2.33 Xmarks, the SPARCclassic X delivers industry-leading application performance to technical as well as commercial markets. Optimized for networks in the SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) environment, the SPARCclassic X, X-terminal is a superb complement to Sun's SPARCcenter(TM) 2000 enterprise-wide computing and SPARCserver(TM) 1000 departmental computing solutions. Key Benefits ------------ - The SPARCclassic X maintains systems investment through a simple and cost-effective, plug & play upgrade to a workstation - The SPARClassic X streamlines systems administration with graphical, easy to use administration tools and simple, single command, installation - The SPARCclassic X increases user productivity through fast application performance and heterogeneous host access - The SPARCclassic X complements existing computer environments by providing user access to DOS, MicroSoft(R) Windows, Macintosh(R) or UNIX(R) applications HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ==================================== Memory - o 4-MB configurations occupy four of the six available SIMM slots o 8-MB configurations occupy two of the six available SIMM slots Terminal Software and Adminstration Tools - o At least one SPARCclassic X Boot and Administration Media Kit per customer site is required AVAILABILITY ============ Products are orderable immediately. All SPARCclassic X configurations began shipping on July 26, 1993. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ===================== Platform -------- Q. Does the SPARCclassic X X-terminal use the same packaging as the SPARCclassic workstation? A. Yes. The same packaging is used to facilitate easy upgrades to the workstation. Additionally, the same monitors, keyboards, and mouse contribute to a highly reliable platform. Q. Does it use the same hardware platform as SPARCclassic? A. Yes. The 50-MHz microSPARC(TM) processor and 64-bit wide memory bus process and accelerate network TCP/IP and X server software, giving the X-terminal its fast application performance. Memory ------ Q. Can I use memory from SPARCclassic or SPARCstation LX systems? A. Yes, the memory used in either workstation can be used for expansion memory in the SPARCclassic X X-terminal. Q. Why offer both 4-MB and 8-MB memory configurations? A. The X-terminal is very efficient in its use of memory; 4 MB is plenty for many applications. But for some customers, memory expansion may be a limitation with the 4 MB configuration which consumes four of six available slots. Q. What memory expansion options are available? A. The same as with SPARCclassic, the 8 MB and 32 MB X-options. Software -------- Q. What are the boot host requirements? A. Any SPARCstation, SPARCserver or SPARCcenter system with Solaris 1.1 or later is required from which the X-terminals can boot and be administered. Q. Does that mean that all of my applications must be on the Solaris 1.1 or later boot server? A. No. The terminals only need the boot host to serve boot-images, act as a resource to supply additional local clients not initially requested by the terminal at boot time, and run the SPARCclassic X X-terminal's administration tools. The X-terminal will operate with any X11-compatable application on any network-based host. Q. What type of local window manager is available? A. OPEN LOOK v3.0, giving the SPARCclassic X X-terminal the same look-and-feel as Sun workstations. Q. What if I want a want to use a Motif window manager? A. A Motif window manager can run remotely on any server on the network, saving terminal memory for other terminal functions or to open more windows. Q. How will software be distributed? A. The SPARCclassic X Boot and Administration Media Kit supplies a CD with all X-terminal boot binaries and host-side installation and administration tools. Q. Can I purchase a single media kit to service all my SPARCclassic X terminals? A. Yes. Only one media kit is required per customer site. The kit includes a user manual and an administration manual. Additional kits may be purchased should additional administration manuals be needed. Q. Can I run applications like AnswerBook(TM) on the SPARCclassic X? A. No. AnswerBook and other applications based on NeWS(R) will not work. Administration -------------- Q. Where does the xtmgr administration tool run? A. xtmgr is a graphical user interface (GUI)-based tool specially designed to operate on the boot host. The tool manages centrally located terminal configuration files, greatly simplifying administration tasks. Q. Can I use SunNet Manager(TM) to administer my SPARCclassic X X-terminals? A. No. The X-terminal administration tools function independently of SunNet Manager. Performance ----------- Q. What are Xmarks? A. Xmarks are a new industry-accepted benchmark to gauge true X-terminal performance. Xmarks take into consideration network as well as graphics performance characteristics. Q. Why does the SPARCclassic X have such high Xmark performance, but have low Xstone performance on the non-GX models, relative to the competition? A. It is that inconsistency for which Xmarks were devised. Xstones characterize only the graphics system and go to great lengths to ignore network effects as so evidenced by the disparity of Xstones between the GX and non-GX models. But the network and CPU components also contribute to true terminal performance. Only certain applications make use of high-performance graphics, but all applications make use of the CPU and network. Xmarks take ALL of these performance components into consideration. Expandability & Connectivity ---------------------------- Q. Are SBus peripheral boards supported? A. No. Applications requiring peripheral functionality are best served by workstations. Q. Like the SPARCclassic and SPARCstation LX systems, the SPARCclassic X supports twisted pair ethernet as standard. Are the connections to thicknet or thinnet the same as well? A. To support AUI, you'll need to purchase an additional adapter cable To support thinnet, you'll need to purchase the additional adapter cable as well as a transciever. Q. Can I put a printer onto the SPARCclassic X X-terminal? A. The SPARCclassic X does not support a printer. Printers, such as the SPARCprinter(TM), are more efficiently utilized as a network resource where many users are served rather than one. Q. Can I use my SPARCclassic X at home? A. No. SPARCclassic X's unique administration tools take advantage of the ability to control and download software from one, centralized location. The SPARCclassic X focuses enterprise-wide computing solutions rather than on the individual.
