MOMENTUM CONTINUES FOR SUNSOFT'S ONC+ NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY Cray, Fujitsu, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba License ONC+ MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 3, 1993-- SunSoft Inc., today announced agreements with leading computer manufacturers to license its ONC+ networking technology. ONC+ will now be available on a wide variety of platforms, from PCs to workstations to supercomputers, and will be supported by leading companies in the industry, including Fujitsu, the world's second largest computer manufacturer, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Cray. In addition, ONC+ has been adopted for the common open software environment and is licensed by The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO), and UNIX System Laboratories (USL). Today's announcement adds to the growing industry momentum for SunSoft's ONC+ technology. ONC+ has evolved from SunSoft's ONC technology, the industry standard for cross-platform interoperability. Today, the ONC networking technology has an installed base of more than 4 million nodes worldwide and is available on major operating systems including DOS, MVS, VMS, OS/2", MacOS, Solaris", AIX", HP/UX, A/UX" and DEC OSF/1. More than 200 hardware and software vendors have licensed ONC technologies to provide distributed computing capabilities within heterogeneous environments. "ONC+ is rapidly being deployed into enterprise-wide computing environments," said Steve Bourne, director of networking technology for SunSoft. "ONC+ combined with other technologies in Solaris creates an exceptional environment for deploying distributed, client-server applications, across global networks." ONC+ is a complete platform for enterprise-wide connectivity in heterogeneous computing environments. It includes a new enterprise name service called Network Information Service Plus (NIS+), Transport-Independent Remote Procedure Call (TI-RPC), Transport Layer Interface (TLI), and the most broadly deployed Network File System in the industry, NFS". In addition, ONC+ is continuing to evolve to meet the growing demands of global interoperability and client-server computing. In a related announcement, SunSoft today launched a new version of the NFS protocol. Called NFS Version 3, it significantly improves the performance, reliability and scalability of ONC+ in enterprise network environments. A component of ONC+, NFS Version 3 provides improved scalability and performance, enhanced security, and support for high bandwidth networks and multi-gigabyte files. Additional capabilities in the new NFS technology include local disk caching, a new automatic mounting facility, and support for sharing files over wide-area network protocols such as TCP/IP. ONC+ is available for licensing from SunSoft. Product inquiries should be directed to SunSoft at 510-460-3267 in the United States and to local SunSoft offices in Europe and Asia.
