Most notably, SunConnect has implemented a certification program which guarantees customers that SunNet Manager Partner products comply with SunConnect's standards of performance and interoperability. Partners can request products be certified on an individual basis or as part of a package of related applications. As computer networks continue to grow more complex, management systems need to grow along with them. A set of management tools and applications that work well for one customer may not be appropriate for another. SunNet Manager Certified products give customers the assurance that those products will perform as stated with the SunNet Manager console and with other third-party products that have met the certification criteria. "Helping customers build a system where network management information is shared and distributed across platforms and applications is central to the philosophy of a cooperative management environment. A key element of cooperative management is compatibility. This new program assures our customers that the applications they choose have been tested by SunConnect and meet the certification criteria," said Stan Baldwin, director of marketing for SunConnect. "Our partners also directly benefit by leveraging the SunConnect Labs as a resource for product certification and, they can use the results to augment their own sales and marketing programs." "Remedy has a long-standing relationship with SunConnect and the seamless integration between the SunNet Manager console and the Remedy Action Request System and Remedy Health Profiler is indicative of that," said Dave Mahler, vice president of marketing at Remedy Corporation. "We believe the companies that will succeed in the network management market will be the ones that focus on solutions, not just technology. SunConnect's certification program helps customers identify the companies who are committed to this market and are working together to meet their customer's network management needs." Because device vendors and independent software vendors have different needs and support requirements based on their level of integration with the SunNet Manager environment, SunConnect has restructured the SunNet Manager Partners' Program into three tiers: Classic Developer, Executive Developer and Strategic Developer. The restructured program ensures that the benefits match the needs of the broad range of partners. Classic Developer The vendor's product can be accessed through the SunNet Manager console and, is currently shipping or shipping within 12 months of joining the program. The vendor must have plans to port the product to the Solaris 2.x environment. Executive Developer The vendor's product requires the SunNet Manager platform in order to run (e.g. products that use SunNet Manager console data or use the SunNet Manager console to access an object or file). The product may be integrated with SunNet Manager APIs, or is developed so that it can read log reports. The product must be currently shipping or shipping within six months of joining the Executive program. The vendor must have plans to port the product to the Solaris 2.x environment. (Note: the product does not have to be exclusive to the SunNet Manager platform.) Strategic Developer The product meets the criteria for Executive Developer and, enables the SunNet Manager console to fulfill a specific market requirement (e.g. the vendor is an OEM of the SunNet Manager console and resells it as part of its solution, or the vendor provides a solution in a strategic market segment for SunConnect). The product is currently shipping and will be ported to the Solaris 2.x environment. The first SunNet Manager Partner Certification certificate is expected to be issued in August. Currently, 3Com Corporation, Frontier Software Development, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Network Test Division and Remedy Corporation have products submitted. As part of a special promotion to introduce the SunNet Manager Partner Certification Program, the (U.S.) $1,000 certification fee is being waived for members of the SunNet Manger Partners Program (joined as of July 1, 1993) or have submitted a product for testing under the preliminary Verified Products Program or, are a new member (joined after July 1, 1993) and submit a product for testing within 60 days of joining. (New member fee waiver offer is good through November 30, 1993.)
