---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash LEADING DECISION SUPPORT SOFTWARE DEBUTS ON SUN PLATFORM SunFLASH Vol 45 #35 September 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- September 22, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that Information Resources, Inc. (IRI), a leading developer of executive information systems (EIS) and decision support systems (DSS), ported its first full client-sever UNIX(R) system software to the Sun(TM) platform. Under a joint marketing and sales agreement, IRI will sell its EXPRESS- brand software on Sun SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) systems running the Solaris(R) operating environment. The company will offer EIS and DSS systems for finance, sales, marketing, human resources and quality assurance applications to Fortune 1,000 companies and government agencies. Pricing for IRI's Workstation EXPRESS software on Sun systems starts at $2,000 for a single-user system. The EXPRESS Server software begins at $25,000. Software is currently available for shipment. DSS and EIS systems give companies the means to collect, analyze and manage business information to help managers monitor operations performance, locate problem areas, perform situation analysis and explore solutions to business problems. Traditional host-based DSS/EIS systems burden the mainframe with both the transaction processing and data query responsibilities. In contrast, client-server solutions pull the query task off the transaction system to distribute decision-making information and allow for more rapid responses to data requests. Currently, SMCC IRI Ports to Sun Systems holds the leading market share for UNIX hardware systems running DSS and EIS software. "IRI EXPRESS will be a vital component of our client-server solution," said William J. Raduchel, chief information officer for Sun Microsystems, Inc. "EXPRESS provides the perfect tool for consolidating and reporting information in a distributed environment." IRI's software offers multiple capabilities within a single, integrated software environment. The software includes a complete set of query and analysis tools, a multi-dimensional database able to import data from other relational and flat databases and a fourth-generation language (4GL) for customizing applications and building new ones. "The explosive growth and acceptance of rightsizing computing platforms and UNIX system applications have placed SMCC at the forefront of an important corporate computing trend," said Jeffrey P. Stamen, president of IRI's software products group. "We foresee many opportunities for successfully combining our EXPRESS software with Sun systems to serve commercial and government customers." Information Resources, Inc., (NASDAQ IRIC), provides a variety of software and information services for improved end user decision making. IRI's Software Products Group, headquartered in Waltham, Mass., develops and markets decision support applications and executive information systems for marketing, sales, planning, finance and operations. In addition to the UNIX operating system, IRI software is available for mainframes, minicomputers and microcomputers.
