---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUNPICS INTRODUCES NEWSPRINTER 20 LASER PRINTER SunFLASH Vol 45 #25 September 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- High-Volume, High-Speed, Multi-Format Laser Printer Extends SunPics' Open Network Printing Model to Large Workgroups MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.,--September 21, 1992--SunPics(TM), the Sun Microsystems, Inc. business dedicated to delivering open network printing and imaging solutions, today unveiled the NeWSprinter 20(TM) laser printer, a 20-page-per-minute PostScript(R)-language-compatible printer. The NeWSprinter 20 product works with NeWSprint(TM) software to extend open network printing to large workgroups. The product complements the SPARCprinter(TM) laser printer, which leads the UNIX(R) print market in price/performance for smaller workgroup and desktop use. The NeWSprinter 20 product is designed to meet the high reliability, throughput and flexibility requirements of large workgroups and small departments. In any computing environment that includes a SPARC(R) system, its 20-page-per-minute speed is accessible to any computer on the network, including PCs and Macintosh(R) computers connected via PC-NFS(R) or other connectivity solutions. The NeWSprinter 20 product prints on both 8.5" x 11" paper (A size) and 11" x 17" paper (B size), and is equipped with two paper trays allowing up to 500 sheets of paper to be printed continuously. The printer is also designed to accommodate a customer-installable high-capacity paper handling accessory, expected from SunPics in early 1993. Resolutions of 400- and 300-dots-per-inch (dpi) are user-selectable. The rated duty cycle of the NeWSprinter 20 product is 50,000 sheets per month, making it suitable for high-volume network printing environments. "There's no other printer on the market that offers 20-page-per-minute speed and a 50,000-page rated duty cycle in this price range," said Lalita Tademy, vice president and general manager of SunPics. "It's the first cost-effective, high-performance, high-volume printer that's optimized for use in any environment that includes a Sun system, and is a perfect companion to our highly successful SPARCprinter." With its multiformat capability, the NeWSprinter 20 product is suited for commercial publishing and financial applications as well as technical applications such as CAD, CAM, EDA, architecture, facilities management and mapping. Sun-Ready; Bundled With NeWSprint The NeWSprinter 20 laser printer is equipped with everything needed to print out of the box. Using a SPARC workstation and the Solaris operating environment as a base, the NeWSprinter 20 product provides print services to the network. It is used in conjunction with NeWSprint software--the backbone of SunPics' open network printing model--which is bundled with the product. NeWSprint software makes it possible for users to print PostScript files from any computer--including Apple(R) Macintosh(R) computers, MS-DOS(R) and Microsoft(R) Windows(R) and compatible PCs, workstations, minicomputers and more--to the NeWSprinter 20 printer over the network. With NeWSprint software, PostScript or non-PostScript files can be sent to and printed on the NeWSprinter 20 or any other output device, from dot matrix printers to laser printers, plotters and color thermal printers. NeWSprint also speeds up printer performance by allowing the page imaging process to be handled by powerful workstation central processing units (CPUs) rather than by slower on-board printer processors. This in turn can reduce printer costs, because no dedicated CPU or memory is required in the printer; functionality can be increased through software upgrades rather than hardware replacement. NeWSprint is bundled with 57 F3(TM) fonts from major font suppliers including Linotype, Monotype, ITC, and Bigelow and Holmes, and also supports Type 1 fonts. Complements SPARCprinter Product The NeWSprinter 20 printer complements the SunPics 12-page-per-minute SPARCprinter laser printer, which is designed for smaller workgroups of 2-8 users and "super desktop" applications that require a lower duty cycle and small-format printing. SunPics continues to market and support the SPARCprinter product; the suggested U.S. list price of the SPARCprinter will remain at $2695. Pricing and Availability The U.S. suggested list price for the NeWSprinter 20 laser printer is $4995. The product will be available worldwide in November 1992 through SunPics and its authorized resellers.
