The alliance between the two industry leaders furthers Sun's presence in commercial markets and gives CA greater access to the rapidly growing SPARC(R)/Solaris market. SMCC is the volume market leader in UNIX(R) multiprocessing servers with its SPARCserver 600MP Series. CA is the leading independent provider of distributed systems management solutions for multiple operating systems and hardware platforms. Consistent with the guiding principles of CA90s(TM), a layered architecture promoting the sharing of common services among software applications, CA-UNICENTER for the Sun platform will provide interoperability with platforms and solutions from other vendors. Together, the two companies will conduct joint marketing and sales activities to provide a comprehensive systems management capability to customers seeking an open systems solution for their commercial data processing requirements. The two companies will market CA-UNICENTER jointly. The agreement also provides for porting additional CA software solutions to Sun systems. "CA-UNICENTER is critical to helping Sun clients rightsize their applications from mainframes to UNIX client-server," said Charles B. Wang, chairman of Computer Associates. "Our mutual clients can use CA-UNICENTER for systems management the same way they have for mainframe environments. They won't need to change the way they manage their business." "Rightsizing is a major requirement for our customers today," said Scott McNealy, president and CEO of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "CA-UNICENTER is a key component of rightsizing. It will let our customers manage their systems resources in today's commercial computing environment, with OPEN LOOK(R) making UNIX system management even easier." CA-UNICENTER technology will enable Sun system managers to administer multivendor networks using commercial-strength systems management tools. Built using CA90s technology, CA-UNICENTER addresses the fundamental requirements of systems management in: * console management * workload management * report distribution * automated storage management * spooled print control * problem tracking * security control * performance monitoring * performance management * systems administration CA-UNICENTER will be engineered to exploit the high performance SPARC architecture and the OPEN LOOK user interface.
