---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC's European Product Delivery SunFLASH Vol 45 #21 September 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also Expands European Manufacturing Facility MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- September 9, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) has focused its European delivery operation by opening a new product delivery center (PDC) in Montfoort, Netherlands. The center will improve system delivery to customers throughout Europe and also demonstrates SMCC's commitment to growth in the European market. The company also announced plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Linlithgow, Scotland. Products manufactured in SMCC's worldwide facilities will be merged at the PDC and then shipped directly to European customers. Through this simplified approach, SMCC will improve lead-times and reduce delivery cycle-times, enabling reductions in inventory levels. SMCC's partner in the new center is FRANS MAAS BV, which will manage freight forwarding, delivery center operations and all pan-European bulk-freighting. Since 1984, when SMCC established its first sales office in Europe, sales have expanded significantly. With European sales now accounting for approximately one-third of company revenues, the PDC will help SMCC better serve this important market. Currently, more than 300 U.S. and 60 Japanese firms have located their centralized European product delivery centers in the Netherlands. The central location, well-developed transportation services and multi-lingual business environment are among the advantages this country offers. Expansion of European Manufacturing SMCC also announced plans to expand its Scotland manufacturing facility. An added 70,000 square feet will create more space for support and administrative personnel, thereby freeing up space in the production area. The expansion project should be completed by next summer and will bring the facility's total size to 210,000 sq. ft. In addition, three new printed circuit board production lines will soon be installed in the facility. The new lines will manufacture central processing modules with volume production scheduled for January l993. SMCC has chosen the Scotland plant for the manufacture of its latest product, the SPARCstation TM 10, the world's fastest desktop workstation.
