The company develops technology that allows PC applications to run on UNIX(R) system workstations. "We saw that the technology developed by Praxsys would allow us to develop emulation products for all UNIX system platforms," said Carl S. Ledbetter, vice president of Sun Microsystems, Inc. and general manager of SunSelect. "This acquisition reaffirms SunSelect's position as a leading provider of PC emulation technology in the UNIX market." Sun Microsystems first entered the emulation market in 1987 with the introduction of the Sun386i workstation, which was equipped with an Intel processor, enabling the user to run both UNIX operating system and MS-DOS(R) applications. Sun also developed and marketed DOS Windows(TM) software in 1988, which emulated MS-DOS applications on SPARC(R) workstations. SunSelect today markets SunPC(TM) software, a high-performance PC emulation package with optional hardware acceleration SBus card products that allow MS-DOS and Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) applications to run on SPARC systems with the Solaris(R) operating environment at 80486 speeds.
