September 15, 1992 Recent industry reports indicate Sun Microsystems, Inc., is strengthening its hold as the world's leading supplier of client-server computing solutions. Sun recently made its debut on "Fortune" magazine's "Guide to the Global 500" listing at number 425. In addition, Sun was recently added to the Standard and Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index and was ranked by Dataquest as the leading workstation/server vendor in Japan for the fifth straight year. According to the Fortune Global 500 listing in the computer/office equipment category, Sun was ranked as the second most profitable company in the world in terms of profits as a percentage of sales and of assets. In two other separate categories, Sun was ranked 20th out of the 500 listing as the company with the largest increase in sales at $3,259.8 million in 1991, a 31.4 percent change over 1990. Sun was also ranked 36th out of 500 as having the biggest increase in profits. Standard and Poor Index Sun recently replaced Wang Laboratories Inc. on the Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index, a widely used measure for the overall performance of the U.S. stock market. The index represents approximately 74 percent of equity capitalization in l990. Sun's Leadership in Japan According to the Dataquest Japan report, "Analysis for the Information Systems Industry," Sun remained the workstation sales market leader in 1991, with 29,800 units shipped and $483 million (U.S.) in revenues, up 26 percent and 22 percent respectively from 1990. Sun accounted for approximately 25 percent of the Japanese market in terms of both units and value of shipments for 1991, when competitors such as Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi and Sony saw both unit and revenue shares decline.
