I have been posting about 20 to 30 articles per month to this mailing list since January 1989. In that time the SunFlash subscriber base has grow from a few hundred people in Florida, USA to about 100,000 people in 44 Countries. There are about 150 "primary" distributors, usually Sun sales offices, who in turn feed many more secondary distributors (aliases at universities, corporations, government facilities etc.). As many organizations also repost SunFlash to local bulletin boards, it is fair to say that 100,000 is a conservative estimate of the subscription base. I hope that you have found this mailing list to be of service. My thanks to those people who have provided the material for me to edit and post and to the many mailing list managers who help keep this distributed mailing list working. I try to be open to suggestions on how to improve this service with my limited resources, so send such suggestions to me. Please share your positive opinions of SunFlash with your local Sun representatives and tell your colleagues about SunFlash. An archive of the first 1000 articles will be placed on the SunFlash archive servers later this week. With tools such as SearchIt, and TextTract (from my home town of East Kilbride, Scotland:-) ), such archives can easily be searched. This archive, which is just under 4 megabytes, is called: florida.sunflash.vol.0-45.tar.Z It is a compressed tar file of the first 45 volumes (just over 1000 articles) of The Florida SunFlash. The long name of this archive file is to help people who search with programs such as archie (see SunFlash 27.14, "The Archie Archive Server"). The full archive names are: solar.nova.edu:pub/sunflash/florida.sunflash.vol.0-45.tar.Z src.doc.ic.ac.uk:sun/sunflash/florida.sunflash.vol.0-45.tar.Z ftp.uu.net:systems/sun/sunflash/florida.sunflash.vol.0-45.tar.Z ftp.adelaide.edu.au:pub/sun/sunflash/florida.sunflash.vol.0-45.tar.Z The archive files for September 1992 should be available by the end of this week. There are compressed tar files for each month as well as the whole of last year. The Russian team will work on enhancements to SunPro commercial software development products under a six-month, renewable contract. The work will be conducted in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk under the direction of Russian supercomputer inventor Dr. Boris Babaian of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Babaian and eight members of the team are visiting the United States this week to initiate the project. The agreement is among the first in which Russian scientists have been employed by a Western firm to develop commercial products for distribution in key markets including the U.S., Europe and Japan. A previous agreement between Sun Microsystems Laboratories, Inc. (SMLI) and Russian scientists focused only on research. 45.02 National Instruments Ports Labview to Sun Software Simplifies Development of Laboratory and Testing Applications MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- September 1, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) and National Instruments Corporation today announced that National Instruments has ported its industry-leading LabVIEW graphical programming software to the Sun SPARC platform. The availability of LabVIEW software for Sun systems gives users a powerful, easy-to-use tool for creating programs in automated testing and laboratory research applications. This is the first UNIX port for LabVIEW and should help National Instruments better penetrate the burgeoning workgroup computing market that Sun dominates. Introduced in 1986, LabVIEW simplifies software development by allowing users to assemble programs from block diagrams instead of using conventional text-based programming techniques. Using LabVIEW, engineers and scientists can concentrate on running test programs instead of creating them. The resulting programs, which feature customized graphical user interface panels, are used to acquire, analyze and present data from a variety of instruments, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and spectrum analyzers. National Instruments has been a leading supplier of instrument interface boards and software drivers for the Sun platform since 1987. 45.03 SMCC/Tektronix/Nat. Instruments Alliance SMCC, TEKTRONIX AND NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS FORM ALLIANCE FOR TEST AND MEASUREMENT SOLUTIONS "Open Measurement Solutions" Product Line Expected to Result in $30 Million In Revenues In First Year MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- September 1, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC), Tektronix, Inc., and National Instruments Corp. today announced that they have formed an alliance to develop, market and sell a new line of integrated test and measurement systems called Open Measurement Solutions. Based on industry-standard products, these solutions will comprise SPARCstation and SPARCserver systems from SMCC; VXI and GPIB test instrumentation from Tektronix; and LabVIEW graphical application software and instrument controller hardware from National Instruments. Open Measurement Solutions will be targeted at industries such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunications and electronic design automation (EDA). The three companies expect nearly $30 million in combined worldwide revenue in the first year as a result of the agreement. The new alliance is one of the first such collaborations of its kind. Its members will collaborate to ensure that their products work optimally together, offering customers the most comprehensive -- yet open and flexible -- test and measurement solutions in the industry. Unlike products from other vendors, these systems can be linked easily to equipment from other companies. This ensures that users will not be locked into proprietary products from a single vendor and that systems can be easily expanded to meet future needs. 45.04 USENIX Systems Administration Conference (LISA VI) (Oct 19-23, 1992) From: carolyn@usenix.ORG (Carolyn Carr) Newsgroups: comp.org.usenix,comp.org.sug, comp.org.uniforum, comp.os.misc, comp.misc, comp.unix.admin, comp.sys.sun.admin, comp.unix.large Subject: USENIX Systems Administration Conference (LISA VI) Organization: Usenix Association Office, Berkeley October 19-23, 1992 Long Beach, California IMPORTANT CONFERENCE DATES & SCHEDULE OF EVENTS HOTEL RESERVATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 28, 1992 45.05 Solaris 2.0 Migration Kit, SunOS 4.1.3 Remember that Solaris 1.1 consists of SunOS 4.1.3 + OpenWindows 3.0 + ONC. -johnj The Solaris 2.0 Migration Kit has now been distributed to over 20,000 customers worldwide.
