Available immediately for Sun systems with the OpenLook interface, FORTRESS gives users and system administrators the ability to detect and investigate security risks such as Trojan horses, worms, viruses and weak passwords. According to Bill Shott, president and founder of Woodside Technologies, "FORTRESS was developed to address the potentially serious security problems inherent in UNIX environments." Because UNIX systems typically have multiple access points through network connections, modems and the Internet, they are extremely vulnerable to attack by disgruntled employees, hackers, viruses and worms. "Our goal," said Shott, "has been to develop a product that both offers comprehensive protection against major security threats and is exceptionally easy to use. FORTRESS, with its point-and-click interface and affordable price, makes security protection practical for all UNIX users, technical and non-technical alike." Adds Dr. Ken Ross, vice-president of development at Woodside, "Prevention is the best course of action when it comes to ensuring system security. By using the FORTRESS scheduler to trigger automatic security checks at frequent intervals, users can spot and correct problems before they develop into a major corporate security breach." FORTRESS consists of four security modules that run from a central menu. The GUI-based scheduler lets users program automatic execution of all security checks through their system's cron file. 1. The Trojan-Horse Detector A Trojan horse is a disruptive program which masquerades as an ostensibly useful one. Particularly dangerous in UNIX are programs that carry the same name as a standard command (i.e., ls, ps, or cp) but perform other functions. For example, hackers frequently plant trojan horses that capture and reveal passwords. The FORTRESS Trojan-Horse Detector searches the user's path or any specified portion of a file system to locate programs whose names match those of UNIX commands. Users can select from three program-name lists supplied with FORTRESS or create their own. In addition, the Detector checks the ownership, directory location and permissions of all selected files. 2. The Worm-Proofer The FORTRESS Worm-Proofer performs four separate tests to determine a system's vulnerability to worm attack through network connections. It analyzes remote login permissions granted through .rhosts and /etc/hosts.equiv files; detects older, insecure versions of the sendmail program; and searches for the "Morris" Internet worm l1.c bootstrap program. 3. The File Inoculator The FORTRESS File Inoculator makes it easy to spot unauthorized changes to system and application files -- whether caused accidentally, maliciously, or by virus attack. Using a proprietary algorithm, the File Inoculator computes unique "finger- prints" which describe the size and contents of all selected files with 99.99% accuracy. FORTRESS stores the fingerprints in a separate, secure database and, at user-specified intervals, uses them to determine whether any inoculated files have been modified. 4. The Password Cracker This FORTRESS module attempts to "crack" all system passwords using any of five separate dictionaries containing more than 100,000 words and their permutations. Included are the real and login names of all users (gathered from the system's /etc/passwd file) and a user-defined dictionary containing words, abbreviations, or acronyms specific to a particular site. If FORTRESS is successful, it identifies the owner of each cracked password. The passwords themselves are not revealed. In addition, the Password Cracker can be used to test proposed new passwords individually, before they are changed on the system. Price & Availability FORTRESS, priced at $495, can be ordered directly from Woodside Technologies' business unit, UNIX Central, by calling 1-800-532-1771. In the newly released book 'Global Software' industry analyst Dave Taylor examines these and other issues at length. Notable for its clear, comprehensive solutions and liberal sprinkling of anecdotes, 'Global Software' is also one of the most readable texts released in the computer science field to date. Information from planning to programming (with an extensive collection of actual program examples) as well as on marketing and presentation are given. Design errors and common pitfalls are pointed out to help readers avoid the same mistakes. The author also discusses export restrictions and other aspects of the politics surrounding international distribution. A clear and understandable explanation of what types of encryption software can and cannot be legally distributed outside of the United States is an added bonus to this work. 'Global Software' is for anyone interested in creating, programming, packaging, or distributing software or any other product for the exploding international market. This enables XIS to offer more affordable document recognition solutions to a broader range of UNIX users, providing them the choice of using the Fujitsu M3096G or the XIS 7000. "There is a tremendous growth opportunity in the UNIX environment for office automation applications, such as document recognition solutions, and XIS and Fujitsu are equally committed to this marketplace," said Wayne Crandall, vice president of sales and corporate marketing, XIS. "By including in ScanWorX support for one of the most popular scanners in the UNIX marketplace, we are providing customers with an unparalleled solution for document input." High-Speed Scanner and Intelligent Document Recognition Software XIS' ScanWorX software will sell for $1,995 for the first license, and $1,450 for additional licenses. The software runs under the UNIX operating system with UNIX systems Labs' OPEN LOOK graphical user interface on the Sun 3X, 4, SLC, and Sparc stations. The Fujitsu M3096G scanner, which scans at a rate of 400 to 1,000 pages per day, sells for $7,500 and comes complete with a compression board and automatic document feeder (ADF). "By combining the power of Fujitsu's M3096G scanner and XIS' ScanWorX software, UNIX workstation users truly have a total solution for document input," said Rita Hernandez, director of imaging products marketing for Fujitsu Computer Products of America. The ScanWorX Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) software allows recognition of virtually any typeface and point size, including those that are underscored, italicized or bolded. This, combined with the software's ability to "learn" as it recognizes, allows ScanWorX to provide users with the highest degree of accuracy during the recognition process.
