---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN MICROSYSTEMS FEDERAL ANNOUNCES VOLUME DELIVERY OF SOLARIS CMW PRODUCT SunFLASH Vol 47 #18 November 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trusted, Distributed Secure Environment for Networked Computers MILPITAS, Calif. -- Nov. 10, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc., (Sun Federal) today announced that volume shipments of Solaris(R) CMW 1.0 (Compartmented Mode Workstation), Sun Federal's distributed, secure UNIX(R) operating system, will begin on Dec. 17, 1992, through Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC). Solaris CMW is the culmination of over four years' effort by Sun Federal's staff of professional engineers to develop the only secure UNIX operating system with a distributed, trusted computing base to be under evaluation by the National Computer Security Center. "As government users move from mainframes to client-server solutions, our ability to offer a highly secure UNIX operating system for Sun workstations and servers will continue to differentiate us from our competitors," said John Marselle, acting president of Sun Federal. "Our customers can now realize the cost savings in a networked client-server environment without sacrificing the security of their information." Solaris CMW is designed to meet all relevant security standards (NCSC BI and DIA CMW requirements), as well as applicable industry standards including the OPEN LOOK(R) Graphical User Interface, MaxSix(TM) and SPARC(R) ABI. As a result, Solaris CMW has unparalleled commercial off-the-shelf application availability. Solaris CMW is based on the commercial Sun(TM) operating system with security enhancements that already support an extensive list of COTS applications, including DBMS products from Oracle, Sybase and Informix. Solaris CMW also includes the OpenWindows(TM) Deskset(TM) applications and a new trusted multi-level secure postmaster for processing classified electronic mail. Solaris CMW was introduced in October 1991, and has been available to government programs and systems integrators from Sun Federal since March 1992. Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., the world's leading supplier of client-server computing solutions. Sun Federal, founded in 1985, is headquartered in Milpitas, Calif. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
