---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash ANDERSEN CONSULTING TO OFFER FOUNDATION CLIENT/SERVER CASE PRODUCT ON SUN MICROSYSTEMS' UNIX PLATFORMS SunFLASH Vol 47 #17 November 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHICAGO, Nov. 10, 1992 -- Andersen Consulting's Foundation(R) software organization today announced its intent to port its client/ server computer-aided software engineering (CASE) product, Foundation for Cooperative Processing (FCP), to Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation's (SMCC) SPARCservers(TM) and SPARCstations(TM) running the Solaris(R) operating system. As part of the agreement, FCP will support SMCC's newly announced SPARCcenter (TM) 2000 server, a mainframe-caliber system for corporate data center applications. "We are participating in SMCC's announcement of the SPARCcenter 2000 server because we believe there is a strong synergy between SMCC's efforts in the commercial UNIX (R)-based systems arena and our own leadership in enterprise-wide client/server CASE solutions," said Don Dall, managing director, FOUNDATION. "We are committed to exploring with SMCC areas of mutual benefit in the UNIX and client/server CASE industries. FOUNDATION's mission is to support the full range of computing platforms -- including leading UNIX platforms such as SMCC's -- to enable our customers to develop strategic client/ server systems within heterogeneous hardware and software environments." A leading client/server CASE product, FCP moves beyond the development of graphical user interfaces and supports the construction of enterprise-wide client/server information systems. The availability of FCP on SMCC platforms will enable developers who are rightsizing their corporate information systems to more quickly and productively develop and deploy applications that exploit the benefits of distributed computing on UNIX client/server architectures. Because of FCP's portability, existing applications can be regenerated for SMCC systems, enabling customers to easily move existing applications to open systems. "Customers want commercial-strength development tools to rightsize large-scale business applications for UNIX client/server environments," said Scott McNealy, president and CEO of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "By automatically generating client/server business applications, FCP gives our customers that power." FCP was introduced in January 1991 and has been implemented in strategic development projects at more than 50 sites, including Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Corp. and the State of North Carolina. Foundation also offers its Starter Kit -- a low-cost suite of Foundation CASE tools, training and support services for development of pilot systems -- which helps organizations develop pilot applications before larger-scale migration to client/server. The integrated Foundation CASE products, which also support development of mainframe-based information systems, support the entire software development life cycle and are among the most widely installed application development environments worldwide. Andersen Consulting has helped organizations apply technology competitively since 1954 when it installed the first computer application for commercial use. The firm helps clients use technology in all phases of their management activities -- strategic, operations and financial.
