---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash TEXAS INSTRUMENTS AND SMCC TO BRING CASE TOOLS TO SPARC SYSTEMS SunFLASH Vol 47 #8 November 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plano, TX (Nov. 4, 1992)--Texas Instruments announced today it has entered into a joint development and marketing relationship with Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) to port TI's integrated computer-aided software engineering (I-CASE) solution, the Information Engineering Facility(TM) (IEF) (TM) onto the SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) platform. In addition, customers who use IEF on mainframes can regenerate their applications on Sun(TM) systems, which allows them to run their applications immediately in client-server computing environment at a lower cost, the company said. The IEF Client/Server Encyclopedia will allow teams of developers to work on a single business system while retaining consistency, structure and high quality. This extends the existing relationship with SMCC and TI's Semiconductor Group for SPARC to bring TI's product to SMCC's SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) systems. Earlier this year, TI introduced the first two microprocessors in a series of products the company is jointly developing with SMCC, including the microSPARC "workstation-on-a-chip," and SuperSPARC, the industry's most advanced RISC microprocessor. TI's IEF tools automate the development of application software, enabling developers to analyze problems, design software and develop systems using graphical diagrams to generate software code. More than 600 enterprises worldwide now use IEF software to improve productivity and to maintain high quality business transactions systems. The IEF Implementation Toolset to SPARC systems is available on a limited basis for basis for field test now. This allows software developers to deploy their IEF applications on SPARC/Solaris systems. Additional IEF products, including the IEF Workstation product, IEF (C/S) Encyclopedia and C/S Construction Toolset are planned to be supported and available in mid-1993. TI said it plans to develop all its IEF products to support both graphical user interfaces (GUI). "IEF on Sun systems delivers the real power, scalability and flexibility commercial developers need to rightsize from mainframe to client-server environments," said Scott McNealy, president and CEO of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "TI's CASE solution on Sun systems offers it all: standards, multitasking, graphical interfaces, networking, and modular systems, all of which increase developer productivity." John W. White, president of TI's Information Technology Group, said the strategic partnership with SMCC confirms TI's commitment to a bold UNIX client/server strategy for its software products. "Sun's dedication to the commercial marketplace is illustrated in its worldwide leadership in UNIX multiprocessing systems and distributed computing," White said. "This gives IEF customers the confidence to rightsize their tools and applications to UNIX. Our commercial customers in MIS organizations require systems like SMCC's to develop and re-engineer their business applications."
