---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Third Party Product Announcements SunFLASH Vol 47 #7 November 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- DeskTalk announces support for SunNet Manager 2.0 Advent's IMAGER DESKTOP for HP ScanJet IIc/IIp preVue Version 3.4 XpressFax 1.0.5+ fax software for SPARCstations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: DeskTalk announces support for SunNet Manager 2.0 From: Phil Little <0005444900@mcimail.com> Contact: Regina Freeman/Philip Little The Bohle Company (310) 785-0515 Packaged Solutions Extend Management Capabilities DESKTALK BRINGS RDBMS INTERFACE & REMOTE MONITOR SUPPORT TO SUNNET MANAGER 2.0 TORRANCE, Calif. -- DeskTalk Systems, Inc. (DSI), has announced that its network management products now support SunNet Manager 2.0. The first product, DataPipe, provides a complete relational database management system (RDBMS) extension to the SunNet Manager platform. DataPipe allows users to store all data collected by SunNet Manager (including events and traps) into an RDBMS for analysis. Using DataPipe, network systems administrators can track and manage network performance more effectively. DeskTalk's second application, Remote Monitor Services Manager (RSM), provides Novell LANtern Services Manager functionality on Sun Workstations. RSM collects, records and interprets data gathered from Novell's LANtern network monitors. RSM's OPEN LOOK graphical user interface (GUI) closely parallels that of the DOS-Windows GUI of Novell's LANtern Services Manager (LSM). "Our applications add a high level functionality to the SunNet Manager 2.0 platform," said David Kaufman, president of DeskTalk Systems. "Because our products are fully integrated with SunNet Manager, we provide users with more complete management solutions. "DataPipe, for example, provides a means of generating countless reports without the user having to learn a new network management system," said Kaufman. In addition to DataPipe and Remote Monitor Services Manager, DeskTalk offers a suite of third-party applications and a full range of support services for the SunNet Manager network management environment. DataPipe Provides RDBMS, SQL Interface DataPipe accumulates and interprets data gathered by SunNet Manager and stores it in a relational database for analysis. A self-configuring program, the product automatically creates the necessary tables and controls database sizing. DataPipe provides standard structured query language (SQL) interface for SunNet Manager. DataPipe includes an SQL scripting and query building tool that enables users to develop a variety of reports and ad-hoc queries, providing them with maximum data retrieval capabilities. DataPipe includes a Sybase SQL Server runtime RDBMS as well as interfaces to databases from Informix, Ingres and Oracle. Additionally, the product allows network administrators to download data into spreadsheets like Wingz or Lotus 1-2-3 for further analysis and for creating charts and graphs. RSM Includes Enhanced Discovery and Automanagement Capabilities DeskTalk's Remote Monitor Services Manager (RSM) brings management of Novell's remote monitor device, LANtern, to the UNIX-based Sun environment. Building on SunNet Manager 2.0's capabilities, RSM provides enhanced discovery functionality. As new network nodes are discovered, they are automatically added to the SunNet Manager map and if the new node is a predefined type, SNMP management through SunNet Manager begins automatically. RSM is a fully integrated network management tool for collecting and analyzing data gathered from Novell's LANtern network monitors. In the event that a LANtern monitor detects a problem such as failure of a server or duplicate IP address, RSM provides automatic real-time alerts on the SunNet Manager console. A powerful performance management tool, RSM's comprehensive reporting capabilities provide the network manager with information such as historical trend analysis, configuration monitoring and fault detection. In addition, RSM generates station statistics which identify active stations, isolate protocols in use and define the quality and quantity of traffic generated by each station. The price for Remote Monitor Services Manager with DataPipe is $3495. DataPipe is offered in a stand-alone package (bundled with a full Sybase SQL Server runtime database) for $1995. This release features xpreVue, a graphical user interface supporting the preVue, Virtual preVue (tm), and preVue-X (tm) product lines. Version 3.4 is now available on Sun Sparc (TM), IBM/RS6000 (TM), HP 9000/400 (TM), Data General AViiON (TM), and Intergraph Clipper (TM). Ports to Motorola m88k (TM), HP 9000/700 (TM), DEC Risc Ultrix (TM), and SCO Unix (TM) are in progress and will be completed within one month. Other ports are planned; please call for more information on availability. The preVue System ----------------- The preVue system (Performance and Response Evaluation Via User Emulation) is a toolset for performance analysis and regression testing of computer software and systems. It provides a "record and playback" user emulation mechanism for both ASCII and X applications. preVue runs on a wide variety of Unix (TM) systems, and is used to test applications that run on almost any computer, ranging from mainframes to workstations. preVue records user sessions, and plays them back as single- or multi-user workloads. preVue synchronizes emulated user input and system responses so that playback is accurate regardless of system load. preVue compares expected vs. actual system responses and calculates responses time for each user action. Post-analysis utilities collect and present this information. preVue automatically generates VU language scripts. The VU language expresses user sessions in terms of user actions and system responses. This C-like language may be edited by the test engineer; it supports almost all C language constructs, including looping, pattern matching, and conditional expressions. Virtual preVue (tm) ------------------- The Virtual preVue option allows multiple networked preVue test systems to operate in unison. A single person can use Virtual preVue to emulate thousands of users. preVue-X (tm) ------------- The preVue-X option provides regression testing and performance analysis for X Windows applications. Because it does not rely on X server extensions, preVue-X supports virtually any X server, and is independent of the Graphical User Interface toolkit. In addition to standard user emulation, preVue-X offers "pseudoserver" and "re-display" modes. Pseudoserver mode allows user emulation without a physical X server, and is particularly useful for multi-user regression and performance testing. Re-display mode offers client-less re-display of X sessions, and is most useful for product demonstrations and X server testing. Recent Releases --------------- Release 3.4 features xpreVue, a graphical user interface providing: * Graphical entry of parameter values * Context-sensitive help on all utilities and options * Defaults management * Support for file name conventions Release 3.3 included: * examine, a utility that performs bit-for-bit comparisons of window and screen images * "User model" extensions to the VU language: user actions are expressed in terms of key, button, and motion events * Client-less re-display (described above) Other services -------------- Performance Awareness Corp. provides testing and performance services, preVue training, and phone support worldwide.
