---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC HONORS WELLS FARGO SENIOR VP WITH MIS VISIONARY AWARD SunFLASH Vol 47 #4 November 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Donates $10,000 to University Computer Science Program MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- November 2, 1992 -- Wells Fargo executive Roy Camblin is increasing the efficiency of the Wholesale Service Group's computer solution -- with potential savings of millions annually. These savings and Camblin's innovative approach to MIS helped him win the first "Information Systems Visionary of the Year" award, bestowed by Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today. The award recognizes Camblin's success in creating an organization-wide client-server solution that improves efficiency, saves money, and brings technology into the hands of the front-line employees. As Wells Fargo Wholesale Service's senior vice president of systems and operations, Camblin constantly looks for ways of making the bank more competitive and efficient through how it deploys its information systems. His efforts reflect a major trend in business today called "rightsizing." At Wells Fargo, he is incorporating innovative, UNIX(R) system client-server solutions to replace traditional mainframe applications -- which many other financial services organizations have yet to adopt. Industry analysts have been making note of the move to rightsize among countless businesses. In fact, Peter Burris from International Data Corp. predicts that 1993 will be the year of rightsizing as MIS shifts its emphasis away from mainframes to smaller networked systems. He believes $7-8 billion will be spent on rightsized hardware, software and services during 1993 in the United States alone. SMCC decided to create its information systems visionary award to honor the professionals like Camblin who are on the cusp of an important movement in information systems. The company solicited nominations from its worldwide field representatives before selecting Camblin. A $10,000 grant will be made by SMCC in Camblin's name to his higher education computer science department of choice. Camblin's vision is to employ an "open, truly portable MIS environment" and eventually run the entire group's core business, performing more than $20 billion in transactions per day, on the UNIX platform. The first application implemented is a risk-control, transaction release system that combines Sun(TM) SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) systems with Oracle's CASE technology. The project took eight months to complete and will allow the group to apply the system to a full range of applications. "Roy Camblin is undoubtedly one of the most trendsetting and advanced-thinking CIOs out there," said Bill Raduchel, chief information officer, SMCC. "He has gone out on a limb to re-engineer Wholesale Service's business by foresaking traditional MIS models and developing an innovative approach for a complex, high-risk, high-security application." Wells Fargo Wholesale Services Group is one of more than a dozen decentralized entities of Wells Fargo & Company, the eighth largest bank holding company in the United States. It is the oldest bank in California and operates more than 614 branch offices in the state. Roy Camblin has been with the bank since 1989 and was previously vice president and manager of bankcard systems. He holds a master's degree in system management and system technology from the University of Southern California and a bachelor's degree from Florida State University.
