Leading Object-Oriented Programming Vendors to Collaborate on Code Reuse Technology VANCOUVER, British Columbia-October 19, 1992-SunPro, the software development business of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced that it has entered a technology development and licensing agreement with Rogue Wave Software, Inc., a leading supplier of C++ class library technology. The agreement centers on Rogue Wave's Tools.h++ class library product, a complete "toolbox" of nearly 100 reusable C++ classes. Under the agreement, enhancements to the libraries will be developed to address areas such as performance, ease-of-use, internationalization, and support for multithreading. SunPro intends to distribute the product at a future date as an add-on to its popular SPARCworks Professional C++ development environment. 46.12 SMCC, GE LAUNCH EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY ALLIANCE Will Train Customers in Object-Oriented Programming MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- October 19, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that it has formed an educational technology alliance with the General Electric (GE) Advanced Concepts Center for the delivery of customer training courses in object-oriented software design methodologies. A rapidly evolving technique, object-oriented programming allows software developers to re-use pieces of programs to quickly create new applications, resulting in enhanced productivity and higher-quality software. SMCC is developing an entire suite of products for its systems that give users the benefit of objects. The new courses from GE will allow SMCC to include this important new technology in its already-extensive training curriculum focusing on the UNIX(R) operating system and the Solaris(R) distributed computing environment. Under the terms of the agreement, the GE Advanced Concepts Center will offer SMCC customers its courses in object-oriented methodology, analysis, design and database design; advanced C and C++ programming; and C++ for non-C programmers. These courses will be available beginning this month. They will be conducted by GE instructors at the GE Advanced Concepts Center site in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and at SMCC's educational facilities in Andover, Mass.; Baltimore; Chicago; Dallas; Milpitas, Calif.; Seattle; and Somerset, New Jersey. Net income for the first quarter was $4.8 million, or $0.05 per share, compared to $26.8 million, or $0.27 per share, for the same period a year ago. The company's computer systems subsidiary, Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation, shipped more than 50 thousandrevenue systems -- a first-quarter record, and an increase of 16% over last year's first quarter.
