Offering the best value in high-performance workstation computing today, SPARCStation 10 couples a fast superscalar CPU, a well-defined multiprocesing architecture and highly integrated ASICs with clever packaging to deliver a machine that excels at both technical and commercial applications. SPARCstation 10 delivers premier workstation value: Applications Performance o Superscalar SuperSPARC microprocessor delivers the most efficient SPECint92/MHz in the industry. o Supports 2 to 4 CPUs to boost performance and increase the number of users and number of jobs that can be handled. o Industry leading memory and I/O busses for fast throughput. Growth o SCD compliant, guaranteeing binary compatibility across Sun's previous generation of SPARCstations and SPARCservers. This allows SPARCstation 10 to be easily integrated into existing networks. o Modular replaceable CPU modules accommodates the fast pace of technology with simple CPU upgrades. o Brand new "pizza-box" industrial design provides enough power and cooling to support TWO MBus and FOUR SBus slots for maximum flexibility and expandability. o Maximum headroom: up to 1-4 CPUs, 512 MB of ECC memory, 26 GB of mass storage Innovation o Best platform for future environments: Object Oriented Programming (OOP), multimedia, multiprocessing, multithreading. o Built-in connectivity: AUI/TP Ethernet, ISDN, serial ports, parallel port. o Fast SCSI (10-MB/sec) support. o 16-bit audio, speaker box and microphone. o Compact packaging The Products ------------ SPARCstation 10 Model 30: Most cost-effective SPARCstation 10 system. 2 times faster than a SPARCstation 2. A: SPEC89 has some deficiencies that lead to distorted performance numbers. It overemphasizes floating point performance even though most real world applications tend to be more heavily weighted towards integer performance. SPEC92 fixes these problems. SPEC92 numbers are generally lower than SPEC89, so that the two cannot be compared. Q: What is the difference between the SPEC89 and SPEC92 benchmark suites? A: Although nine of the 20 benchmarks in SPEC92 are from SPEC Release 1 (SPEC89), these nine have been made more robust and less susceptible to compiler optimizations. The run time for some of the benchmarks has been increased to keep pace with the faster CPUs available today. Additionally, the floating-point suite includes two C language benchmarks and five single precision benchmarks that did not exist in SPEC89. The larger number of benchmarks and the diversity of applications they represent make these a significantly improved set of benchmarks when compared to the SPEC89 suite. Two metrics are published for SPEC92: SPECint92 and SPECfp92. SPECint92 is the geometric mean of the SPECratios of six integer benchmarks. The SPECratio for a benchmark on a given system is the quotient derived by dividing the SPEC Reference Time for that benchmark (run time on a DEC VAX 11/780) by the run time for the same benchmark on that particular system. SPECfp92 is the geometric mean of the SPECratios of fourteen floating-point benchmarks. Q: What cables are bundled with the SPARCstation 10? Which ones are optional? A: The SPARCstation 10 comes with the following cables: o Power cords for monitor and system units o Keyboard cable o System monitor cable o Twisted Pair Ethernet (RJ45 connectors) Optional cables orderable through SunExpress or your local Sun office: o Serial splitter Y-cable X985A o SCSI expansion cable X980A o Parallel port cable, IBM interface X975A o Parallel port cable, Centronics interface X976A o Audio/AUI adapter cable X987A Notes: 1. Order X985A only if TWO serial ports are required. 2. X975A & X976A are different from the Centronics cable bundled with the SPARCprinter. Order these cables to attach printers with Centronics or IBM parallel ports to the SPARCstation 10. Q: How do I select the AUI (Thick) Ethernet connector or the Twisted Pair (10BaseT) Ethernet connector? A: If either a Thick Ethernet or a Twisted Pair Ethernet cable is connected to the system, the firmware is smart enough to find the cable to boot off of. But, if *both* a 15-pin Thick Ethernet cable and an RJ45 Twisted Pair Ethernet cable are connected to the system, the firmware considers the default cable to be the Thick Ethernet cable. Remember, if a GT is installed in the SPARCstation 10, a separate Ethernet port (SBE card) must be added and used as the system's network connection.
