---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SPARCserver 600MP Upgrades with SuperSPARC and SuperCache SunFLASH Vol 41 #33 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Module swap upgrade to SuperSPARC with SuperCache - Cost effective board upgrades available from entire SPARCserver 300 and SPARCserver 400 series - Disk and tape investment protection - Aggressively priced enclosure exchanges for previous generation products - Enhanced future upgradeability This announcement of SPARCserver 600MP series upgrades with SuperSPARC and SuperCache, reaffirms Sun's commitment to the world's largest RISC/Unix server installed base. The SPARCserver 600MP upgrade line has six attractively priced, expandable offerings giving customers tremendous SuperSPARC processing power. These paths also provide maximum investment protection for the customer's existing peripherals. A module swap allows customers who own a SPARCserver 600MP Model 120 or Model 140 to upgrade their processor to Sun's latest SuperSPARC processor with SuperCache. This is Sun's easiest and most cost-effective upgrade. Board exchange upgrades are available to customers who own SPARCserver 300 series, SPARCserver 400 series, or a Sun-3/470. All board exchanges provide full support of a customer's existing IPI and SCSI disk investment with expansion support to the 1.3-GB drives. All three board upgrades include a single slot GX card and 64 MB of memory standard. Additional memory can be added by purchasing an x-option. The enclosure exchange upgrades offer an aggressively priced path from older generation desksides and servers. Customers with 3/160, 3/260, or 4/260 have a path to a SPARCserver 670MP with SuperSPARC, SuperCache, 64 MB of memory, a single slot GX card, CD-ROM, and two 1.3-GB high performance SCSI disks. Customers with 3/180, 3/280, 3/480, or 4/280 rackmounted fileservers have a path to a SPARCserver 690MP with SuperSPARC, SuperCache, 128 MB of memory, CD-ROM, and four 1.3-GB IPI disks. Additional memory can be added by purchasing an x-option. All SPARCserver 600MP upgrades with SuperSPARC and SuperCache are available in September, 1991. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - Access to a SunCD is required to install the board upgrades. (Enclosure exchange upgrades include a SunCD.) SPARCserver 600MP software is available on CD-ROM media only. - SMD disk drives and controllers are not supported on SPARCserver 600MP upgrades. Early testing showed SMD drives to be a bottleneck to overall system performance. (Sun Professional Services offers limited support of selected SMD drives.) - Customers upgrading from a SPARCserver 470 with a fixed disk tray (as opposed to a removable or sliding disk tray) cannot add internal 1.3-GB x-option drives. These customers can add 1.3-GB disks in an expansion cabinet. Alternately, customers can order a 1.3-GB SCSI disk in a Desktop Storage Module (X571A) or order an enclosure exchange upgrade to SPARCserver 670MP. - SPARCserver 600MP upgrades do not support previous generation memory except for qualified SIMMs from SPARCserver 370 and 390 machines. - Upgrades to SPARCserver 600MP systems only support included GX or optional ECL monochrome frame buffers. Other VME, P4, or SBus graphics are not supported. - Customers with ECL monochrome frame buffers will need to purchase an SBus monochrome frame buffer (UG-MFB-G) to connect them to SPARCserver 600MP upgrades. - Enclosure exchange upgrades to SPARCserver 690MP do not include a frame buffer. Customers requiring monochrome video should order the SBus monochrome frame buffer, UG-MFB-G. - VME Prestoserve cards do not support NFS acceleration on disks connected to SBus-based controllers, such as the SCSI disks on the SPARCserver 670MP. SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - Solaris 1.0.2 or above is required for upgrades to SPARCserver 600MP with SuperSPARC and SuperCache. Order USX-21 at no charge if media is required. - Customers running Sun FDDI/DX (dual attach VME) will require version 2.0 software (FDA-2.0-4-4-21U). - Customers with Sun Prestoserve require version 2.3 software (PRE-2.3-4.1-4-21U). - Migration of Sun Network Coprocessor NFS accelerator boards require version 1.0 software (SNC-1.0-4.1-4-21U).
