SPARCstation IPX to SPARCstation 10 model 30 and 41 --------------------------------------------------- - Chassis swap to models 30 or 41 maintains investment in monitor, SBus cards (some exceptions noted in price list), internal disk, external peripherals, keyboard and mouse. - Dramatic performance improvement from SPECint92 21.8/SPECfp92 21.5 to SPECint92 44.2/SPECfp92 52.9 (model 30) and SPECint92 52.6/SPECfp92 64.7 (model 41) - 32-MB ECC memory standard vs. 16-MB for SPARCstation IPX - GX frame buffer standard - Speakerbox and microphone included - Optional 424-MB internal SCSI disk with pre-installed Solaris - Lower cost of ownership than for SPARCstation IPX - "No penalty" pricing from SPARCstation IPX to SPARCstation 10 model 30. SPARCstation 1/1+ to SPARCstation 10 model 30 and 41 ---------------------------------------------------- - Chassis swap to models 30 or 41 maintains investment in monitor, frame buffer and other SBus cards (some exceptions noted in price list), external peripherals, keyboard and mouse. - Dramatic performance improvement from SPECint92 13.8/SPECfp92 11.1 to SPECint92 44.2/SPECfp92 52.9 (model 30) and SPECint92 52.6/SPECfp92 64.7 (model 41) - 32-MB ECC memory - Standard 424-MB internal SCSI disk with pre-installed Solaris - Speakerbox and microphone included - Lower cost of ownership than for SPARCstation 1/1+ Sun-3 and 386i upgrade to SPARCstation 10 model 30 -------------------------------------------------- - Full system upgrade to model 30 includes 19-inch color monitor - Huge performance improvements from 5 MIPS maximum to over 86 MIPS - 32-MB ECC memory standard - GX frame buffer standard - 424-MB internal SCSI disk with pre-installed Solaris - Speakerbox and microphone included - Lower cost of ownership than for Sun-3 and 386i systems - Represents a brand new start with SPARC from "top to bottom" - Requires the return of just the old system CPU board and monitor Module Upgrades for SPARCstation 10 ----------------------------------- Module upgrades will soon be available as follows: Upgrade To: Upgrade SS10-41 SS10-52 SS10-54 From: ------- ------- ------- SS10-30 X X X SS10-41 X X Pricing will reflect a fair "return value" for returned modules and will most likely be "no penalty" relative to SPARCstation 10 model 52 and 54 pricing. Therefore, there's no incentive for a customer to wait for models 52 and 54 since they can upgrade from models 30 and 41 with no price penalty. Current Upgrades to SPARCstation 2 and SPARCstation IPX ------------------------------------------------------- Our current line of upgrades from Sun-3, Sun 386i, SPARCstation IPC, and SPARCstation 1/1+ are priced to encourage these customers to improve their system performance NOW by moving immediately to SPARCstation 2 or SPARCstation IPX. The most cost-effective upgrades to SPARCstation 10 are from SPARCstation 2 and SPARCstation IPX so upgrading to those systems now is a great move. For more information on upgrades to SPARCstation 2 and SPARCstation IPX, please consult the Price List. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Selected upgrades are "no penalty" priced. What do we mean by this? A. By "No Penalty" we mean that a customer can buy a SPARCstation 2 or IPX now and upgrade later to SPARCstation 10 for the same price that they would have paid for the SPARCstation 10 system. It works like this: SPARCstation 2 price (4/75GX-32-P43) $ X Upgrade to SPARCstation 10 (UG-SS2-S10-41) $ Y ------- TOTAL $ Z NOTE: $ Z is the SAME price as SPARCstation 10 model 41 (S10GX-41-32-P43) The upgrades paths that have been priced at "no penalty" levels are SPARCstation 2 to SPARCstation 10 model 41 and SPARCstation IPX to SPARCstation 10 model 30 (the incremental 16-MB of RAM with SPARCstation 10 is taken into account in the IPX to SPARCstation 10 upgrade price). No penalty pricing allows our customers to buy a SPARCstation 2 or IPX NOW and upgrade when they're ready without worrying about the cost. Q. So, the upgrades are "box swaps"? A. Right. In most cases, the installed base customer can retain their current monitor, internal disks, external peripherals, SBus cards, keyboard and mouse. All they have to do is remove them from the old system and move them to the SPARCstation 10. That way we allow them to preserve a significant amount of their current investment. Q. Why do some upgrades come with a frame buffer and others do not? A. In the case of SPARCstation 1, 1+, and 2, most current frame buffers will "migrate" to the SPARCstation 10. So, those customers don't need another frame buffer. In the case of SPARCstation IPX, the frame buffer is built-on to the motherboard so, we've added a new single slot GX frame buffer with the upgrade. Upgrades from Sun-3 and Sun 386i are full system swaps so, they'll get a new system from top to bottom. One main exception to frame buffer migration is that double wide GX frame buffers that shipped with SPARCstation 1 systems and some early SPARCstation 2 systems are not supported in SPARCstation 10. These customers need to upgrade their frame buffer by ordering UG-GXFB at the time they place an order for their upgrade to SPARCstation 10 (see Ordering Instructions for more details). All single-slot GX frame buffers will migrate to the new system and are fully supported. Q. What about GS customers? Will their frame buffer migrate? Q. What does the customer return to Sun and, do they have to return something before they can upgrade? A. For the most part, the customer will be required to return their old system chassis, frame buffer (if applicable), and the memory that came with their base system. Sun-3 and 386i customers will return only their old system CPU board and monitor. Sun's customers do not have to return anything before upgrading. The required returns are due back to Sun within 30 days of our shipping the upgrade. Q. What about OS requirements when upgrading to SPARCstation 10? A. SPARCstation 10 upgrades require Solaris 1.1 SMCC version A or above. Upgrade customers can order USX-21 at no charge if media is required. Q. When will the upgrades be available? A. We're taking orders now. Upgrades will begin to ship on the same day that systems ship. Q. Do these upgrades replace all other desktop upgrades? A. No. We still have excellent upgrades available to SPARCstation IPC, SPARCstation 2, SPARCstation ELC, and SPARCstation IPX.
