---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Industry's Best MP Server Value SunFLASH Vol 41 #25 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- New pricing, more robust configurations make SPARCserver 600MP an even better value than before -- Lower prices on entry midrange server, SPARCserver 630MP -- One additional 1.3GB SCSI disk bundled with SPARCserver 670MP packages at no additional charge -- Increasing 64MB configurations in SPARCserver 690MP to 128MB as the standard configuration at no additional charge -- Replacing the 2.3GB 8mm tape in 600MP configurations with the new 5GB 8mm tape Within five months of first shipments, SPARCserver 600MP series has become the Number One installed MP UNIX server, surpassing the installed base of systems from vendors shipping product for up to eight years. The reason is simple: SPARCserver 600MP represents the best value in a UNIX server. Now, by lowering the price of the entry midrange server, SPARCserver 630MP, Sun makes the industry's best server value available to even more customers. And for customers that require greater expandability and larger configurations, SPARCserver 670MP and 690MP are being offered with richer configurations at no additional charge. Sun is also introducing the next generation 5GB tape drives bundled into these new configurations. These devices offer twice the data transfer rate and twice the capacity of the current 8mm tape drives. Also available in the SPARCserver 690MP system or expansion rack is a new tray that accommodates four of these 8mm tape drives. FEATURES AND BENEFITS --------------------- Features Benefits --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lower package prices for entry * More customers can deploy Sun's midrange MP systems industry leading midrange MP server --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Added 1.3GB disk to standard * Database and NFS performance are SPARCserver 670MP configurations tied to I/O throughput. Spreading data across multiple disk adds both capacity and improved performance --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Added 64MB memory to standard * Many RDBMS products require large SPARCserver 690MP configurations amounts of memory for optimum performance. 128MB base packages provide configurations better matched to these larger applications --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next generation 5GB 8mm tape * SPARCserver backup capacity is more than doubled and backup time is reduced --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Multi-tape tray for SPARCserver 690MP * Allows up to 25GB unattended backup capacity when combined with 5GB tape standard 8mm tape slot reducing system administration cost and complexity ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q: What are the changes in packages that are being announced? A: - SPARCsystem 630MP packages are being price reduced by $4,000. - Model 140 four cpu configurations are being price reduced by $2,500 on all 600MP platforms. - Putting the 5GB tape in the system packages requires a different package number so manufacturing and CS can distinguish these new configurations. The 2.3GB tape configurations will be transitioned off the SMCC price list. - The new entry package for the 670MP includes two 1.3GB SCSI disks rather than one, so -P51 package will be transitioned off the SMCC price list. - On the 690MP the package numbers remain the same, but all configurations now include 128MB on memory. The 64MB packages will be transitioned off the SMCC price list. So essentially this is a repricing of the 128MB packages that exist today.
