---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunSoft Establishes European Operations SunFLASH Vol 41 #19 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Offices In UK, France And Germany Offer Solaris And Interactive 3.0 Product Lines MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 11, 1992 -- Establishing its position as a global software supplier, SunSoft Inc., today announced operations across Europe to market and distribute the Solaris and Interactive UNIX System 3.0 product lines. The company's offices are located in the United Kingdom, France and Germany. SunSoft, Inc. began operations on July 1, 1991 in Mountain View, California. The company introduced the industry's first UNIX shrink-wrapped solution, Solaris 1.0, in September of last year. It also announced the more powerful Solaris 2.0 system software for the SPARC and 80X86 computing platforms for delivery later this year. In January 1992, SunSoft acquired the Intel UNIX business from Interactive Systems Corp., the makers of Interactive UNIX System 3.0. Today, the company is the worldwide leader in 32-bit system software with an installed base of more than 600, 000 units. Establishing local offices gives SunSoft easier access to the growing European UNIX market. According to InfoCorp, a market research firm based in Santa Clara, Calif., Europe represents the world's second largest market for UNIX-based systems,following the United States. In 1991, Europe accounted for 35 percent of the world UNIX market in initial value and 31 percent in units consumed. Currently, SunSoft's customers in Europe include the continent's largest multinational system manufacturers, such as Siemens AG, Philips, ICL and Sun Microsystems Computer Corp., and software distribution groups, such as ISE-International, Danet, Merisel-DNS, Esselte and Metrologie. In addition, SunSoft's products are used in a range of markets including banking, oil and gas, automotive, manufacturing and government, by users such as Dresdner Bank, Banco de Sabadell, BMW, Daimler-Benz, Saab, British Petroleum, Elf Aquitaine, French Army, British House of Commons, London Futures and Options Exchange, Reuters and British Telecom. "UNIX is a recognized and established operating system in Europe with its penetration in the national and European Community government and business accounts," said Edward Zander, president of SunSoft. "Europe's rapid growth in global computing makes it critical for the success of SunSoft and our products." Northern Europe SunSoft's Northern Europe office is located in High Wycombe, United Kingdom. It is responsible for the marketing, service, support and distribution of the Solaris and Interactive UNIX System 3.0 product lines in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Belgium, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and Israel. The office is headed up by Douglas Miller, managing director of SunSoft, Northern Europe. Miller has more than six years of experience in the European UNIX market. Prior to SunSoft, he was managing director of European operations for Interactive Systems Corp. where he was responsible for the marketing, sales and distribution of the company's UNIX product line. In addition, he has spent several years in technical, business and academic positions. Southern Europe Located outside Paris, in Velizy-Villacoublay, SunSoft's French office manages the marketing, distribution, service and support of the Solaris and Interactive UNIX System 3.0 product lines in Southern Europe. This site services the growing markets of France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Yugoslavia and Albania. It also supports the markets of Africa and the Middle East. Bernard Moitel is director general of Southern Europe. Moitel is a veteran of the European computer industry, having spent more than 14 years in software and hardware. Before SunSoft, he was general manager of The Santa Cruz Operation, France where he established the company's presence in the French market. Prior to that, he spent seven years at Computervision and several years at Digital Equipment Corp. Central and Eastern Europe SunSoft's Central and Eastern European operations are based in Grasbrunn, outside of Munich. The office is responsible for the marketing, service, support and distribution of SunSoft's products in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It also services the nascent East European markets, which include Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Rumania and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Michael Beier is sales manager for Central and Eastern Europe. Prior to joining SunSoft, Beier managed Eastern European sales for Novell, where he was responsible for a five-fold increase in the company`s business.
