---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC Awarded ISO 9000 Quality Registration SunFLASH Vol 41 #18 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ISO 9000 Registration Critical for U.S. Companies Doing Business in Europe MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --May 11, 1992-- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation today announced that all three of its worldwide manufacturing sites (Westford, Mass.; Milpitas, Calif.; and Linlithgow, Scotland) have been awarded ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9002 Registration by the British Standards Institute. Sun has also received separate ISO 9001 registration for its U.K. customer service operations and its European logistics center. Registration to the ISO 9000 standard is essential for doing business in the European 1992 Common Market, as it has become widely accepted as a requirement of cross-border quality. There is also a growing acceptance of the standard in the United States; it has been adopted by NIST, FDA, NATO and the U.S. Department of Defense. Less than 15 companies within the U.S. computer industry have achieved worldwide ISO 9000 Registration, giving them an advantage overseas. SMCC sought ISO Registration because more than 50 percent of its revenues come from markets outside of the United States. This is a major milestone for the company and its employees," said Kevin Melia, who is chief financial officer of Sun Microsystems, the parent company, as well as its chief quality officer. "Attaining ISO Registration is part of our overall commitment to quality and an integral part of our strategy of bringing value to our customers." ISO 9000 comprises a series of five international standards for quality management and quality assurance. Registration to one of the ISO 9000 standards can only be achieved after a company demonstrates the operation and effectiveness of its quality management systems to an independent third party. ISO 9002, the "Model for Quality Assurance in Production and Installation," is used for independent external third-party assessment.
